ST. LOUIS — Seeking to tell the story of St. Louis while sticking to what made their famous “birds on the bat” logo iconic across all sports, the Cardinals incorporated those concepts to create a uniform bold City Connect.
A collaboration with Nike that has been underway for about 2 1/2 years has resulted in the first regular-season red jersey in the franchise’s 142-year history. Those chain-stitched red birds perched on the bat remain aimed at Cardinals fans familiar with the team’s iconic jerseys, but the nickname displayed on the front – “The Lou” – is a nod to Nelly, the star from Saint-Louis who rapped this phrase. about his love for his hometown.
Wavy red stripes, symbolizing the mighty and muddy Mississippi River that runs along the St. Louis border, are emblazoned on the jerseys. Another thicker stripe runs down the leg of the white pants, matching a red cap produced by New Era that features an STL design in capital letters. The font used for the cap logo is reminiscent of 1921, the last year before the franchise adopted a bird logo on the bat.
“It was a fun process because the iconography of Cardinals baseball and its history is endless on what you can do, so it was difficult to narrow it down,” Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III said. “The fact that the story (of the uniforms) is new, but still kind of a flashback, is something we’re really proud of.”
The Cardinals will wear their City Connect jerseys in a game for the first time Saturday against the rival Cubs. In total, the Redbirds will wear the new uniforms in 12 home games this season.
The jerseys and caps went on sale Monday at the Cardinals team store, Ballpark Village and a pop-up merchandise trailer on Clark Avenue. The team and Nike will host launch parties to introduce the new design to fans Monday night and Friday in front of Busch Stadium.
While it might have seemed like a natural move, the Cardinals’ choice for a red jersey was a big departure from their traditional white and gray, DeWitt said. During their storied history, the Cardinals have only worn red jerseys once – on August 28, 1999, as part of an MLB “Shirts Off Their Backs” promotion.
“We’ve never had a red jersey – even though half the (fans) wear red, but we’ve always focused on wearing that jersey in spring training and batting practice,” he said. DeWitt said. “We had everything but red on the field, so for me going red was new. It allows us to be different with something we’ve never done, but also not be so radical with a color that’s not part of the family.
DeWitt said the club benefited from being later in the MLB cycle for the City Connect uniforms, allowing them to manually select the items they liked. Long a protector of the Cardinals’ iconic logo – insisting for years that the birds on the bat be chain-stitched rather than a flat, graphic font – DeWitt has also stood firm on the idea that City Connect jerseys feature the primary colors of the team. . Some franchises, like the Red Sox, Phillies and Nationals, have ventured completely outside of their traditional color spectrum, but not the Redbirds.
“We did a lot of iterations and Nike was pushing us to think outside the box, which is part of what it’s about,” DeWitt said. “There were versions where we took out birds with sticks and all sorts of crazy things. (Nike) would probably admit to pushing teams further out of their comfort zone than many of them would like, and we’ve seen that in some franchises.
“I just didn’t feel like this franchise, given its particular place in the uniform hierarchy, needed to do that.”
DeWitt is very proud that the team was able to partner with Nelly and borrow from his lyrics “Country Grammar” with “The Lou” splashed across the jersey. Nelly narrated the team’s hype video on the release of the new uniforms as only he can, putting his love for “The Lou” and the Cardinals into the final product.
“You see, we brought something new to Lou.
Rich in tradition and immersed in Cardinals red.
Representing the 314 with a new look.
Threads for those who are St. Louis hardware.
It doesn’t matter if you started here or just arrived.
When you’re part of Cardinals Nation, you’re from here.
So, say it loud, I’m from The Lou and I’m proud.
