Eminem is facing backlash over lyrics in his new song, “Houdini,” in which he references the infamous July 2020 shootings involving Meghan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez.
The rap superstar spits in his latest track, released Friday: “If I had to ask Megan Thee / Stallion if she would collaborate with me / Would I really have a chance of achieving something?” / I don’t know but I’m glad I do.
“Is it too much to ask, as we enter a few days into Black Music Month, that people don’t allow Eminem’s mocking of Megan, a BW who was a victim of gun violence, to be targeted in a song by a white rapper?,” one critic wrote in response via X Friday “People are too comfortable disrespecting black women.”
Another chimed in: “You haven’t released an album in 20 years, people don’t look at you anymore but hey, mention Megan’s assault and get people talking @Eminem, you’re going to collapse.”
Music journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy called Eminem “out of touch,” adding via Thee Stallion?
“Houdini” is Eminem’s first single from his upcoming studio album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)”.
Some, however, supported the “8 Mile” star, noting that he has always criticized other artists in his music.
“If you’re offended by Megan thee Stallion’s line in Eminem’s #Houdini, you clearly don’t understand/know who Slim Shady is – the point is for him to make fun of everyone,” one person wrote via X Friday in the rapper’s defense. “It’s not that deep and it’s a good line. This is not a discord.
Another pointed out that perhaps Eminem shot Megan, 29, because she referenced Mariah Carey’s diss track about the rapper “Without Me” — “Obsessed” — in his 2024 song “Hiss” .
Megan raps on the track: “I feel like Mariah Carey / I got these ns so obsessed.”
“Megan thee stallion used lyrics from a song shot on EM, but Em made a bar about his problem with being shot in the leg and y’all went wild saying Eminem always lashes out to people,” the social media user wrote.
“You should all stfu.” you were all excited about Megan when she did that ass bar. Eminem sees everything😂😭 #HOUDINI.
A spokesperson for Megan declined to comment. Eminem’s rep did not respond to Page Six’s request.
The “Mockingbird” rapper isn’t the first male artist to seemingly take Megan’s shooting lightly.
Eminem’s longtime friend and collaborator 50 Cent trolled the “Savage” rapper when he first learned she was shot in the foot — and later apologized.
“Damn, I didn’t think that shit was real,” the “In Da Club” rapper, 48, said in July 2020.
“That sounded so crazy @theestallion I’m glad you’re feeling better and I hope you can accept my apology. (sic) I posted a meme that was floating around. I wouldn’t have done this if I knew you were really hurt, sorry.
In November 2022, Drake cast doubt on Megan’s version of events, rapping on “Circo Loco,” “This bitch lyin’ about to get a shot, but she still a stud.” »
The phrase caught the “WAP” rapper’s attention, prompting him to respond, “Stop using my shot for influence, that N-as bitch!”
“Since when is it cool to joke about (sic) women getting shot!” You n-like especially RAP N-AS ARE LAME!
Megan added at the time: “Ready to boycott shoes and clothes, but a dog goes after a black woman when she says one of your mates mistreated her.”
In December 2022, Lanez, 31, was convicted of one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle for the Megan shooting incident.
He was also found guilty of an additional count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The “Luv” singer was later sentenced to 10 years in prison, which he is currently serving at North Kern State Prison in Delano, California.
