The 124th U.S. Open is underway at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
From the jump, the field chases lead Scottie Scheffler – who is on a heater not seen since Tiger Woods’ heyday. Scheffler started in the afternoon heat with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. Scheffler opened with two bogeys through six holes, but he birdied the seventh to get back to 1-over. Instead, it was McIlroy who took the lead early on in this group. He made back-to-back birdies early to move to 2 under.
Brooks Koepka, who has won this tournament twice, looked like he was on track for a third early on. After briefly holding a share of the lead, Koepka made three bogeys down the stretch to move back into a tie for the day.
Instead, it was Patrick Cantlay who took the lead in the first wave. He made three birdies on his final five holes of the day to get his 5-under 65. That gave him a brief two-shot lead on the field entering the clubhouse. Ludvig Åberg closed the gap slightly with his 4-under 66 in what was his very first round at the US Open.
Woods, on the other hand, struggled. After a birdie to open his day, he made five birdies in seven holes around the turn before finishing with a 4-over 74. He will need a big outing on Friday to qualify, which he does not have managed to do this last month. at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler’s struggles and yet…
Scottie Scheffler is 1-over, still very much in contention. I feel like he should be 10 years old.
Here are some statistics:
– Fairways hit: 5/12 (146th)
– Putts: 24 at 12 holes (98th)
– Greens in regulation: 9 out of 14 (36th)
We could go into strokes gained stats, but you get the point.
He hits the ball everywhere, doesn’t make a single putt… and yet he is only 1 over par, just six points behind the clubhouse leader, Patrick Cantlay.
This looks a lot like a team that goes 3 of 20 from 3-point land and still wins.

Afternoon reset: Cantlay lead looks secure
As the second wave approaches, here is where we stand:
– Patrick Cantlay’s 5-under 65s are still roaming the field.
– Rory McIlroy failed to make it out in the first round. He’s 2 under at eight. If anyone wants to challenge Cantlay’s 65, Rory is the most likely candidate.
– Scottie Scheffler sends shots everywhere, but managed to stay at 1-over.
– Only 19 of the 156 players are under par.
– Brooks Koepka left without speaking to the media, which is understandable. He was 3 under only to make bogey on three of his final six holes to finish in a tie.
– And for the future, tomorrow’s cup could prove very interesting. The rule is top 60 and ties. Right now it would be +1, which would include 80 players. That’s how tight things are right now.

Scheffler’s birdies
It took seven holes, but Scottie Scheffler finally looks like Scottie Scheffler. He drained a curling 12-footer for birdie at No. 7, his first birdie of the day, to get back to 1-over.
Also, can we talk about its white walls…

Another bogey for Scheffler
Scheffler missed a 62 foot putt by 18 FEET! This led to a bogey, pushing the world number 1 to 2 for six. This was his toughest round in… over a year maybe.
