Texas A&M baseball is two games – maybe three – away from achieving a historic first for the program.
With two wins against the nation’s No. 1 Tennessee baseball team in the College World Series, the No. 3-seeded Aggies will have won the program’s first CWS title. But that’s a prospect that’s easier said than done, as Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle probably knows.
Texas A&M is 1-4 all-time against Tennessee under the leadership of the Aggies, whose Vols counterpart Tony Vitello actually served as recruiting coordinator at TCU from 2011 to 2013. The only win Schlossnagle’s game against Tennessee took place in the 2023 SEC Baseball Tournament, and the Vols beat the Aggies 7-4 in the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Additionally, Texas A&M is dealing with several injuries as it heads to the biggest stage the sport has to offer, including likely top-10 draft pick Braden Montgomery. Jace LaViolette injured his hamstring against national No. 2 seed Kentucky on Monday, but returned and was able to play against Florida in the CWS semifinals on Wednesday.

7:29 p.m.: Prager gets out of trouble after forcing the fly and line out to end the round. Texas A&M limits the damage in the second.
7:27 p.m.: Prager forces Tears to foul, but Curley singles up the middle to score Dreiling from third. Tennessee gets a run back.
7:24 p.m.: Texas A&M with some trouble in the second, as Tennessee puts on back-to-back runners to start the inning on a pair of singles.

7:18 p.m.: Grahovac walks to the pitcher to end the inning. Aggies have had issues with Causey since he entered.
7:13 p.m.: Causey has been exceptional in relief, already having four strikeouts in 1 and 1/3 innings. He begins the second with consecutive takedowns of Kent and Chestnut.
End of first inning: Texas A&M 2, Tennessee 0
7:10 p.m.: Prager retires 3-hole hitter Billy Amick to retire the Vols in order. Good start for the left-hander.
7:06 p.m.: Prager with a comfortable start, as he strikes out Brock Burke for the second out of the inning. Prager is called early.
7:02 p.m.: Prager forces Tennessee leadoff hitter Christian Moore to shortstop to start the night. This is a big deal, because Moore has been red hot in the CWS.

6:58 p.m.: Camarillo strikes for the final out of the inning, stranding two in scoring position, but the Aggies land an early combo to take a 2-0 lead.
6:57 p.m.: Sorrell steals second best, his ninth of the season, to put two runners in scoring position for the Aggies. Ali Camarillo is up to the task.
6:56 p.m.: And there’s an RBI single from Sorrell! He hooks it into right-center field to score Appel and advance Schott to third. The Aggies lead 2-0!
6:54 p.m.: And Burton hits while swinging. Caden Sorrell is next.
6:54 p.m.: AJ Causey is ready to get the Vols out of trouble. He will face Ted Burton to start.
6:50 p.m.: Dean Curley receives the error as Schott reaches. Tony Vitello has seen enough and eliminates Stamos.
6:49 p.m.: Hayden Schott hits a comebacker to the mound, and it takes a high jumper allowing Appel to advance to third. The Aggies have runners on the corners.
6:46 p.m.: And now a double from Jackson Appel! The Aggies have a leadoff home run and a double in their first three at-bats.
6:44 p.m.: Jace LaViolette flies out to left field for number 1.
6:42 p.m.: And Grahovac? The freshman starts the game with a bang, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead on a solo homer to right field.
6:40 p.m.: Grahovac steps into the batter’s box to lead the game. Here we go.

6:27 p.m.: Georgia SEC opponent Charlie Condon was just named the winner of the 2024 Golden Spikes Award, which honors the nation’s top amateur baseball player. The announcement was made in Omaha just before the CWS finals.

6:10 p.m.: Tennessee gives the ball to left-hander Chris Stamos for the opener.
6 p.m.: Texas A&M star outfielder Jace LaViolette is, as expected, in the Aggies’ lineup. He injured his hamstring earlier in the CWS against Kentucky, but survived that ailment in the semifinal against Florida.
