Everyone knows that the best Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring are Mimic’s Tears, but let’s be real: we’ve been using them for two years now, and if you ask me, the novelty of creating a slime clone of yourself has faded. Fortunately, Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC added several new Spirit Ashes to play with, including a Secret Ash that I hope will become a staple for Bleeding build users: Jolan and Anna, Twin Swordhands of Night. One wields a katana and the other wields claws, but both quickly build up the Bleeding status effect with their attacks and rip huge chunks of HP from bosses’ health bars when it triggers.
These spiritual ashes will not be suitable for each Elden Ring encounter or build – some bosses are immune to bleed, sisters don’t have much health and with a FP requirement of 144 they can’t be summoned without at least 25 Mind – but they synergize exceptionally with Bleed builds and are also a great way to incorporate Bleed into your approach to boss fights if your build is lacking it. However, acquiring them is a lengthy process, as you will need to complete a side quest, make a specific choice regarding an NPC’s fate, access a hidden area, and perform tricky Torrent platforming to reach the secret location where you get them.
But don’t worry, because in the guide below I will go over this entire process in detail. Without further ado, here’s how to get Jolan and Anna’s secret spirit ashes in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Complete Count Ymir’s questline
To obtain Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ashes, the first thing to do is complete Count Ymir’s questline at Manus Metyr Cathedral.. This building is located in Altus of Eastern Scaduand it is accessible by take the underground path from the ruins of Moorth to the village of BonnySO going east across the bridgesand finally going up the path north until you reach a fork, from which you head left.
Count Ymir sits on the throne inside —Jolan is leaning against a pillar in front of him and to his right, by the way, so feel free to talk to her— and will ask you to ring a bell in the “sacred ruins” of the Land of Shadows. The ruins he refers to are actually Finger RuinsAnd the first two parts of his quest involve finding two of them and ringing the bells at their centers.
First of all, Ymir will direct you to the Finger Ruins of Rhia, which you can access from the southeast of Cerulean Coast.. After ringing the bell there and returning to his cathedral to speak to him again, He will then ask you to find the bell in the Finger Ruins of Dheo, accessible from the eastern part of the hinterland..
Note that the path to the Cerulean Shore can be found by going down the sloping path southeast of the Grace Castle Front Site across from Castle Ensis in the Grave Plains. The Hinterlands, on the other hand, are much harder to reach; you’ll first need to obtain the O Mother gesture from a Marika statue north of Bonny Village, then use it in front of the Marika statue near Shadow Keep, Grace’s Backgate Site to open a hidden path. I recommend using this interactive map from the Elden Ring DLC if you’re having trouble finding these locations or items.
Return to Ymir once you have rung both bells and talk to her.. After thanking you, he will give you a third Finger Ruin to findwith a map showing that it is directly below the Manus Metyr Cathedral. This is your cue to reload the area while resting or quickly traveling to the cathedral grace site, in which case Ymir will disappear from her throne. To access the Finger Ruins basement, approach his throne and interact with him to open a secret path.
Fight Metyr, Jolan, then Ymir
Go down the ladder and you will enter the Ruins of Miyr’s FingersOr you will be invaded by Anna Swordhand of Night; defeat her to obtain her Claws of the Nightthen activate and rest on the Grace Site in front of you ring the bell nearby.
It will begin the boss fight against Metyr, the Mother of Fingersan entity that you will have to defeat to complete Ymir’s quest. My complete guide to the battle explains it in detail, but some basic things to know are that Metyr is weak to frostbite and bleed and deals physical and magic damage. Once dead, return to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr.
You will be invaded by Swordhand of Night JolanAnd Defeating her will trigger a minor boss fight with Count Ymir himself. Now all you have to do is defeat him to conclude his questline.
Obtain the Sword of the Night Jolan Spirit Ashes
Once Ymir is dead, reload the area and return to where Jolan was originally leaning. There, you will find her injured and dyingAnd she will tell you to “give me light”. Following this, you will have the possibility to offer him an Iris of Grace or an Iris of Occultation (you’ll find one of each in the Shadow Keep Legacy dungeon, another Iris of Grace in the Tree Worship Shrine’s Grace Site, and another Iris of Blackout from an Omenkiller in Hold of Rebuke).
If you give Jolan an Iris of Cloaking, you will get his Sword of Night.a unique Katana that scales exclusively with Dexterity, causes a buildup of bleeding, and features the Witching Hour Slash Ash of War that lets you perform a series of rapid, unblockable slashes. However, if you want to obtain Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ashes, you will need to give her an Iris of Grace.. This is because You will receive in return the spiritual ashes of Swordhand of Night Jolan, which you will need for the final part of this process..
I should note that even if getting one reward prevents you from getting the other in your current playthrough, you may be able to find someone willing to give you the Sword of Night on the item trading subreddit Elden Ring from r/PatchesEmporium (Spirit Ashes can’t be dropped, so you won’t be able to get Jolan’s this way). You can also get the Sword of Night in an NG+ cycle.
WARNING: At the time of writing, there is a bug where upgrading Swordhand of Night Jolan Spirit Ashes prevents Jolan and Anna Spirit Ashes upgrades from working properly, preventing you from making them stronger with Grave Gloveworts. If you intend to get Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ashes, don’t upgrade Jolan’s Swordhand of Night.
Reach the top of Rabbath’s Rise
Now that you have Jolan’s spiritual ashes, The last thing you need to do is access the secret room at the top of Rabbath’s Rise that contains his sister’s doll, Anna.. First of all, head to the shamanic village in the hinterlandsthat we find south of the bridge you crossed to reach the Finger ruins of Dheo earlier.
This is a beautiful location that has huge connections to the history of Elden Ring and the Land of Shadows itself, so be sure to explore it at some point. For now, however, head to its southern edge and you’ll see the top of Rabbath’s Rise towerwith small pieces of flat land on the side of a cliff that you can jump onto with Torrent to get closer to it. Carefully go down and you will see a stone balcony where you can land; do it once you are close enough to do it safely.
At this point, just enter the room This balcony is attached to and interact with Anna’s puppet body to obtain Jolan and Anna’s spirit ashes..
Note that you can freely switch between Swordhand of Night Jolan’s Spirit Ashes and Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ashes whenever you want by returning here.although Jolan alone is honestly not worth using since she doesn’t have much health. But together, these two Swordhand sisters are capable of great things.
