Concorde is from Sony PlayStation’s next big bet on live gaming and the sci-fi shooter is only a few months away. A recent round of previews has finally given us a better idea of what to expect, and the reactions so far have been as mixed as those from fans. after seeing the initial gameplay during last month’s PlayStation 5 showcase.
With his “We already have guardians of the galaxy at home“Cinematic trailer and 5v5 hero shooter game structure, it’s easy to classify Concord like just another Monitoring clone hoping to capitalize on the disappointment of that game’s lackluster sequel. But Firewalk Studios’ first-person arena shooter actually seems to be trying to combine elements from games as different as Destiny 2 And Valorization.
PC gamer I had fun with an early version of the game but found its characters a bit meh. VGC summarized the shooting as follows:Fate shooting, with slightly slower movements and about double the time to kill Call of Duty.” IGN found the movement floating and was concerned about the balance and readability of his classes. Game Informermeanwhile, made the game look much better in person than it did in its recent trailers.
Whether this pastiche can turn into anything fun, much less sustainable over the lifespan of a modern game-as-a-service, is a question we won’t know the answer to until well into the future. ConcordThe ‘s release date is August 26 on PS5 and PC. For now, here are a bunch of new details on how the shooter will work and what might set it apart from a crowded field:
12 maps are available at launch
The different battle arenas showcase different parts of Concords sci-fi world and include the fortified outpost Freewater, the storm fishing platform called Water Hazard, the lightning harvesting facility Shock Risk, and the mountainous observatory Star Chamber. The PlayStation Blog also indicates that players will be able to test a map called Bone Mines in July.
And six modes, some of which are non-respawning
Previews were able to play three of these modes, one of which was similar to Call of DutyKill Confirmed’s Deathmatch mode in which players must collect tokens from the corpses of their opponents. While this mode includes respawns, others do not, with rounds ending if one team is wiped out. According to the PlayStation Blogwhich includes Cargo Run, where players compete for a package, and Clash Point where they fight for control of a specific area.
Hope you like double (and triple) jumps
Each of the 16 Freegunners (heroes) will have a unique set of stats and abilities, and there are even some light deck-building mechanics to customize your hero bench before each match. Most Freegunners have double jumps. According to PC Gamersome even have triple jumps. They also have dodges that momentarily move the camera out into a third-person view.
There are no ultimates or supers
Contrary to Monitoring And Valuation, PC gamer reports that there are no ultimates in Concorde (or super if you are Fate-piled like me). Each Freegunner has two unique abilities, like the giant 1-Off robot that can suck up trash, as well as a passive. But there is no gauge that charges during the match to allow you to wreak havoc on the opposing team.
Players can deploy structures to help them stay
What Concorde a, according to Game Informer And Screen Screamare abilities that deploy equipment that lasts between rounds, unless destroyed by your enemies. This light building mechanic where players can try to control certain areas of the map with persistent shields, healing pads, and other advantageous structures is certainly something that could add a new layer of tactics to arena combat.
Which makes Concord unique?
As far as Sony’s hero shooter has a notable gimmick, it seems to be how character switching works during matches. PC Gamer reports that players expand their roster by “rescuing” different characters, and can only take six into any given battle. However, when swapping between them during rounds or respawns, they can add the class bonus of the previous dead character to the current one, providing over 100 different combinations of bonuses to play with at any given time.
Post-launch updates will be free
Firewalk Studios has previously explained how it plans to release a new cinematic teaser for its characters and world in the game every week. The studio also confirmed that future content updates will be free. Here’s the exact language of the PlayStation Blog:“Discover some of the content that will be available at the game’s launch on August 23 and will be expanded over time through post-launch updates at no additional cost.”
Microtransactions will only be cosmetic
Priced at $40 just like Helldivers 2, Concorde falls somewhere between the current freemium model of Overwatch 2 and the old loot box mode at full price of the original Monitoring. Firewalk Studios insured VGC that the only paid microtransactions in the game will be cosmetic. “There are purely cosmetic pieces that you can choose to further customize your character’s appearance, which you can choose to purchase,” the studio explained. VGC“This does not affect gameplay. We strongly believe that the full experience should be available to all of our players.” It appears that the new maps, characters, and modes will be free and available to anyone who owns the game.
Beta Early Access Weekends are happening in July
Players will be able to try Concord for themselves next month. The early access closed beta runs from July 12-14 and requires a pre-order of the game to access (a pre-order gets you five keys, so only one person in your friend group needs to take the plunge). The free-for-all open beta runs from July 18-21. During these betas, which are essentially just demos, players will have access to all 16 Freegunners, four maps, and three modes. There’s also a $60 “deluxe” version of the game that gives players early access to the full game three days before its August 20 launch.
