José Iglesias performs new single for fans and crew
42 minutes ago
Jose Iglesias didn’t start Friday’s game for the Mets, but he did start the postgame celebration and fireworks display.
Shortly after the Mets beat the Astros, 7-2, Iglesias emerged from the dugout, grabbed a microphone and performed his new single, “OMG,” in front of the 32,465 fans in attendance. With the stadium lights out, Iglesias — who released the song Friday under his stage name, Candelita — strolled near second base and urged fans, “New York! Let’s keep the party going!” as the song began to play over the sound system.
Accompanied by The Queens Crew, the Mets’ dance team, Iglesias sang along to the song as his teammates watched from the first base line. When the second chorus came on, they swarmed Iglesias onto the field, screaming and waving their hands in the air.
“It was a special moment,” Iglesias said after the performance. “It (shows) how tight we are. … We ride in it and we enjoy it. One day at a time. This is what we must do now.
“This group has become a family. It’s awesome. We have great human beings here. We get along, we care about each other and we play good baseball.”
The plan for the postgame performance was put in place before the game, although Iglesias said it would only go ahead if the Mets won.
“It’s all about winning. It’s not about me. It’s about teamwork,” he said. “It’s about continuing to have good energy, competing every at-bat, every pitch, every inning and one day at a time. »
Originally scheduled for release in July, “OMG” was dropped from streaming services earlier today, in part due to lobbying from veteran JD Martinez. The night before, Iglesias had performed it at a Mets charity dinner at Citi Field.
Iglesias joined the Mets on May 31 and made the single his signature song.
“It’s hard to express how I feel right now,” he said. “There are a lot of emotions. It was a good game. The guys get the job done once again. It’s a dream come true. I am very humble about this. …I’m floating right now.
