Shilese Jones injury at Olympic trials: What you need to know
Shilese Jones injured her knee on vault in warmups before the meet Friday night and scraped all but the uneven bars. USA Gymnastics said the decision not to compete Sunday came after she was reevaluated Saturday.
Jones had established herself as a key player for the Paris team, along with Simone Biles, having won all-around medals at the last two world championships. She came into the trials with a shoulder injury that kept her out of nationals earlier this month, but coach Sarah Korngold said she was ready to compete.
However, during Friday’s warmups, Jones landed on vault and fell to the mat, clutching her right leg. Biles ran to check on her, and Jones sat on the podium for several minutes before being helped backstage by Korngold and a medical staffer.
Suni Lee’s Health Journey and How It Changed Her Mindset
Suni Lee is in good shape to make the five-athlete U.S. team at the Paris Olympics. She finished fourth at the national championships in early June and has since improved her uneven bars and floor routines. But a health scare 15 months ago — she developed a kidney condition that caused her to retain so much fluid she couldn’t even put her handgrips on — upended her life. Some days, she couldn’t even get out of bed.
Lee said a phone call she received on Jan. 4, the details of which she wished to keep private, was a turning point for her. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going back to the gym tomorrow and I’m going to be better than I’ve ever been.’ That was the day I was like, ‘Yes, this is what I want.’ And I’m going to think about it,” she said. Read Nancy Armour’s full story about Suni Lee’s health journey.
How many Olympics has Simone Biles participated in?
Biles has competed in two Summer Olympics: Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. However, she has only competed in some of the 2021 events after suffering from “twisties” syndrome, which caused her to lose track of where she was in the air, putting her physical safety at risk.
How many gold medals does Simone Biles have?
Simone Biles has won four Olympic gold medals, all at the 2016 Rio Games. She led the Final Five to team gold, won individual all-around gold, and won two of the four individual events: floor exercise and vault. She also won a silver medal (in the 2021 team competition) and two Olympic bronze medals on balance beam in 2016 and 2021.
Simone Biles’ Floor Routine Catches Taylor Swift’s Attention
Pop superstar Taylor Swift responded to a social media post Friday night regarding Simone Biles’ floor routine, which features Swift’s “Ready For it.”
What happened to Kayla DiCello?
Kayla DiCello injured her Achilles tendon during the first vault on Friday. She left the track in a wheelchair and USA Gymnastics announced she would not compete the rest of the evening.
Jordan Chiles: What you need to know
The Tokyo Olympian stood out at the US Classic with a strong performance in all four events. Chiles may not give the United States a huge score in any given event, but she doesn’t leave any holes either.
“I think I realized I had the potential,” Chiles said of the difference between this season and last, when she struggled to transition from the NCAA to the elite.
“A lot of times you say you want to do something and you never know what’s going to happen because there’s a lot of eyes on you and expectations,” Chiles added. “When you put that aside, you realize, ‘I’m just going to go out there and be the person I need to be and put all the effort into every practice.’ »

Simone Biles’ Netflix series: what you need to know
Netflix recently released the trailer for “Simone Biles: Rising” and announced that the four-part documentary series will premiere on July 17, nine days before the Opening Ceremony. “Rising” follows Biles’ return to competition after a case of “slap syndrome” forced her to sit out most of the Tokyo Games.
Is Simone Biles going to the Olympics?
Simone Biles’ presence in Paris is almost a lock, but it will be made official after the final competition session of the Olympic trials tonight. Widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, Biles will be making her third appearance at the Summer Olympics. She won four gold medals and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Games, and a silver and a bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Simone Biles Yurchenko Double Pike
Simone Biles received a standing ovation from fans for her Yurchenko double pike on Friday. No matter how many times she does it, it’s still breathtaking to see it in person. Biles reaches a great height on the safe, and the power required to do so practically falls off her as she turns around. She had to take a step to control the landing, but it was just nitpicking. The judges clearly agreed, giving him a score of 15.975, including 9.75 for execution.
When do the Summer Olympics start?
The Paris 2024 Olympics begin with the Opening Ceremony on July 26. Gymnastics competitions begin on July 27 with the men’s qualifying round. The women’s qualifying round will take place on July 28.
Who is Simone Biles’ husband?
Simone Biles is married to NFL player Jonathan Owens, who is currently a safety for the Chicago Bears. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Simone Biles is guaranteed to be at the Olympics. But after her injuries, who will join her?
Call it carnage, chaos or just plain bad luck, the four women joining Simone Biles at the Paris Olympics may end up being the ones healthy enough to make the trip.
On Friday night, in the span of 30 minutes, Shilese Jones suffered a knee injury that limited her to just one event and Kayla DiCello was knocked out with an Achilles tendon injury. Meanwhile, Skye Blakely, a member of the U.S. team that won gold at the last two world championships, limped onto the field on crutches due to a ruptured Achilles tendon that occurred during practice two days earlier.
What makes this situation so devastating, on top of all that, is that the U.S. women’s team seemed, if not ready, to be in very strong form after the national championships four weeks ago. And now everything is turned upside down.
Nancy Armour explains what all these injuries mean for Team USA.
