Emmy season is back, and Tony Hale (“Veep”) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) are announcing the 2024 Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, along with new Television Academy president Cris Abrego.
This year, FX was the network with the most nominations: “Shogun” and “The Bear.” The Japanese drama garnered a whopping 25 nominations, including Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, while “The Bear” was a close second with 23. Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas star in The Bear.
Wait, weren’t the 2024 Emmys already in January? Not quite. Hollywood strikes forced the Television Academy to postpone the 2023 broadcast until January of this year, right in the middle of Oscar season. And now, nine months later, we’re doing it again.
With voting ending June 24 and the 76th Emmy nominations being announced Wednesday, the Emmy campaign is now in Phase 2. And unlike last year, where strikes led to months of uncertainty and a lack of talent participation, this time around, nominees are ready to hit the ground running again.
The TV Academy’s nearly 24,000 members chose from a total of 229 series submitted in the key categories of drama, comedy and limited/anthology series in 2024, down 33% from last year’s 309. And with fewer submissions, the organization’s sliding scale led to fewer nominations in several categories (dropping to five each in the main comedy and limited/anthology/movie categories).
Part of that decline is due to a drop in production volume as networks and streamers cut back on original series. But last year’s strikes also delayed many productions, including shows that didn’t make the cut this year but will be back in contention in 2025, like HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (and likely “The Last of Us”), Prime Video’s “The Boys” and Netflix’s “Bridgerton.”
Meanwhile, the Emmy rules have changed only minimally this year. Perhaps most notable is the last-minute methodology shift for scripted variety shows. With so few entries, the category has been transformed into a “juried” competition, with members of a peer group reviewing the submissions and the top two with 70 percent approval getting the nod.
In January, the Emmy Awards saw record ratings for the Kudocast, which was canceled due to its long delay. The event was in the presence of an NFL playoff game, which didn’t help matters, as it drew just 4.3 million viewers. But ironically, the little-watched show received some of the best critical acclaim in years for an awards show — Emmy or otherwise. The January event, hosted by Anthony Anderson and produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, earned high marks for its nostalgic tribute to TV hits from the past 75 years, reuniting the cast of shows like “Cheers” and “Martin” while paying homage to classics by recreating moments from shows like “I Love Lucy” and “All in the Family.” That’s why Jesse Collins Ent. is back to direct the September broadcast as well.
The 76th Emmy Awards will air live from the LA Live Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, from 8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT on ABC. The broadcast will then be available to stream the following day on Hulu. A host has not yet been named.
