What can Brown do for you?
For those looking for a big story at the 2024 British Open, 29-year-old English golfer Daniel Brown delivered a fine performance on Thursday. Having had little success in recent tournaments, Brown took the lead from Shane Lowry with a birdie putt on the 18th hole to head into the second round as the outright leader.
Brown was decisive and methodical throughout the afternoon, and perhaps even surgical on his final holes: he wasted no time in sinking the birdie putt, perhaps signaling to the rest of the field that he was in the right frame of mind to tackle the rest of the tournament.
Heading into the second round, Brown will need to contain Lowry and keep the good juices flowing — and, he says, maybe keep his family and friends from getting too carried away.
USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates, highlights and more from the 2024 Open Championship below.

He shot an 8 on the par-5 fourth hole and bogeyed the third, fifth and sixth holes. He was 13-over after six holes.
Brown in second after the round
Daniel Brown finished his second round with a par, 1 over par, and heads into the weekend two shots behind leader Shane Lowry.
McIlroy enters second round and tries to qualify, but Rose continues his streak
Rory McIlroy started his day with a drive to cross the projected cut line from 5 over par. Starting from 7 over par, he left his birdie putt a few feet from the first hole. On the par-4 second hole, his driver landed him in the rough, landing 117 yards from the hole, with his second landing in the semi-rough and left a 7-foot putt to save par, which he made.
Justin Rose is playing clean after saving par on the 9th hole and has now gone 27 holes without a bogey. He is currently 4 under par.
Justin Rose makes his move, Scottie Scheffler is within range
Justin Rose had a great start to his second round. After a nice approach to the 7th, Rose easily birdied his way back to within three shots of the lead. Scottie Scheffler, seeking his third major title, bogeyed the 18th but is still five shots back of the lead heading into the weekend.
Shane Lowry finishes second round with two shots lead
Shane Lowry capped off an impressive second round with a birdie putt on the par-four 18th hole to finish his 18 holes at 2-under par, a 69. He is 7-under, a two-shot lead over Daniel Brown, and reached the clubhouse as the wind began to pick up for the rest of the field trying to catch up.
Tiger Woods misses cut, finishes 14 over par
Tiger Woods had two days he’d like to forget at The Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Course in Troon, Scotland. After shooting an 8-over 79 in the first round, the 15-time major champion had a similar experience Friday, missing the cut in his third consecutive major, finishing 14-over par. The last time that happened was in 2015, when he failed to qualify for the weekend at the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship.
Shane Lowry takes sole lead in standings
Shane Lowry birdied the 16th hole to reclaim the lead. Daniel Brown is one shot behind. Meanwhile, Justin Rose is three shots back after birdieing the par-5 4th hole. Rose is the only golfer on the course who has not made a bogey on a hole in 22 holes.

The wind rises at Royal Troon
The British Open wouldn’t be complete without the elements. And, almost suddenly, the wind is affecting play all around Royal Troon. It’s going to make the second half of this second round quite interesting.
Bogey on number 2 for Justin Thomas
Justin Thomas began the second round tied for third at 3 under par, but the two-time PGA Championship winner had already surrendered a point.
After saving par on the first hole, Thomas made bogey on the 389-yard par-4 second hole. Thomas remains tied for third at 2 under par.
Daniel Brown takes the turn after another bogey
Daniel Brown lost the lead after making his second bogey of the second round on hole 9.
That makes Shane Lowry, at 5 under par after 13 holes, the current solo leader.
Chaos at number 11 for Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry had some trouble on the 11th. He hit his second shot into a gorse bush, insulting a cameraman. Lowry then dropped and hit a provisional shot on the green from 20 feet, which would have likely resulted in a bogey. However, a spectator found his second shot in the middle of the gorse bush. More than 20 minutes later, Lowry dropped and hit his shot towards the front of the green. He then two-putted for a costly double bogey and moved back into a tie for the lead with Daniel Brown.
Patrick Cantlay moves up the rankings
Patrick Cantlay may be having the best round of the day. The American birdied the 10th hole to finish 4 under par and 2 under par for the title. He is five shots behind leader Shane Lowry.
Shane Lowry takes the lead in the rankings
Shane Lowry birdied the eighth hole, the Postage Stamp, to take the lead in the Open. The Irishman is 3 under par for the day and one length ahead of Daniel Brown.
Shane Lowry shares lead with Daniel Brown
Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open champion, made two early birdies on holes 1 and 4 to take the lead in the Open and become the first player to reach 7-under par in the championship. However, he was derailed by a bogey on hole 5 and is now tied with Daniel Brown for the lead. Brown is tied on the first two holes.
Tiger Woods stumbles off tee to start second round
Tiger Woods, who had six bogeys and two double bogeys in a 79, had a rough start to the second round. Woods double bogeyed the second hole and bogeyed the fifth hole to drop to 11 over and tied for 151st. He then made his first birdie on No. 6 but is in danger of missing the cut.
