Right-hander gets record signing bonus
July 18, 2024
Burns, 21, will receive a record signing bonus of $9.25 million, sources told MLB.com. That’s more than the $9.2 million the Pirates received last year for No. 1 overall pick Paul Skenes.
“It’s always a good thing,” Reds director of amateur scouting Joe Katuska said of the signing. “Obviously, the first step is scouting the player, the second step is selecting him, but the third step is probably the most important part: getting him signed, going through the physical process and putting the contract on paper.”
The slot bonus value for the No. 2 pick this year was just over $9.79 million. The Reds’ top pick in 2023, the No. 7 overall pick, Rhett Lowder, signed for $5.7 million after being drafted.
Burns, the No. 6 overall prospect in MLB Pipeline’s draft and its top-rated pitcher, was 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts for Wake Forest in 2024. He was the ACC Pitcher of the Year and a Golden Spikes finalist, and led all of college baseball with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings.
Burns traveled to Cincinnati from his home in Tennessee and passed his physical earlier Thursday. He signed his contract at the Great American Ball Park offices early Thursday evening.
Then Burns will travel to Goodyear, Arizona, on Sunday to begin his professional life. Where he will pitch his first games is yet to be determined.
“We’ll get him on Monday,” Katuska said. “The biggest thing is where he’s at in his pitching progression. He’s got a few innings left to pitch, but it’s been a while since he’s been on the mound in a game situation. We’re going to protect the long-term interest and the projections.”
