The final major of the year began with the 152nd Open Championship and English major debutant Daniel Brown was the surprise leader of the night after the first round, with Shane Lowry just behind in pursuit of a second Open title.
Brown was one of the last players to finish late Thursday night, adding a birdie on 18 to cap a stunning 65 and move ahead of Lowry into the clubhouse.
American Justin Thomas set the benchmark early with a three-over-par 68 in wet and windy conditions on the Scottish coast. But Rory McIlroy had a nightmare day, shooting a seven-over-par 78, and will need a miracle round this afternoon to qualify for the weekend. Tiger Woods also put in a good performance, shooting an eight-over-par 79.

The Open 2024: Marcel Siem in action
The afternoon wave of players enjoyed the best conditions yesterday (and are at the top of the leaderboard) and will all be out tomorrow morning, again with milder conditions if the forecast is to be believed.
Germany Marcel Siem It certainly seems to suggest that Troon can be caught today, as he birdied three of the first four holes while being part of the very first group on the course. Siem went from +2 to -1 for the championship in the blink of an eye, just outside the top 10.

Tiger Woods frustrated by tough day at Troon
Tiger Woods put on a fine display with an eight-over-par 79 in the first round of The Open at Royal Troon on Thursday.
The 15-time major winner reversed course in years when he had a long birdie putt on the third hole but then fell badly in a round that included six bogeys and two doubles.
The 48-year-old’s efforts were also partly overshadowed by TV commentator Mark Roe’s comments about his fitness during his struggles on the Ayrshire links.
Woods’ struggles since being involved in a serious car accident three years ago, as well as numerous back and knee surgeries, have been well documented and he is now playing a limited schedule.
Roe, a former European Tour professional, told an international television broadcast supervised by the R&A organisers: “If you look at the eyes you have to think you have to take a lot of painkillers to deal with the pain. It’s not easy.”
Woods was not asked about it as he only answered four questions after his round, but he has spoken about his issues before, revealing that at the 2023 Masters he was experiencing “constant” pain in his right leg.
He also admitted to seeking professional help to manage his medication issues in the past.

Justin Thomas heading in ‘right direction’ after impressive Open debut
A year after being knocked out of The Open after making “stupid mistakes”, Justin Thomas is much happier with his game after shooting a three-under-par 68 to take an early lead at Royal Troon.
Having missed the cut by eight shots at Hoylake 12 months ago, the American was worried about his Ryder Cup place – even though he would subsequently receive a captain’s pick – as he struggled to find form.
Although things have improved for him this year with five top-10 finishes, including an eighth at the US Open last month, he has failed to make the Masters or US PGA Tour weekend.

Paul McGinley believes Jon Rahm is ‘hoping for a deal’ between the PGA Tour and LIV
Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes a disgruntled Jon Rahm is hoping for a deal between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour to revive his game.
Rahm has finished in the top 10 of all nine LIV events he has entered since his surprise move to the Saudi-funded breakaway, but his performances at this year’s majors have been hugely disappointing.
The Ryder Cup star finished 45th in his Masters title defence and missed the cut at the US PGA Championship before being forced to withdraw from the US Open – which he won in 2021 – with a toe injury.

Matt Wallace makes first eagle of 152nd Open, shares lead on first day
England’s Matt Wallace made the first eagle of the 152nd Open Championship to catapult himself into the tie for the lead at Royal Troon on a difficult first morning marked by unfamiliar winds and intermittent showers.
The 34-year-old had to go through final qualifying last year only to miss the cut at Hoylake, but had no such worries this summer after finishing 20th in the DP World Tour rankings.
He got off to a brilliant start as he birdied the second hole and holed out from the semi-rough on the 612-yard fourth to move to three under par and share the lead with two-time American major winner Justin Thomas, who himself missed the cut last year after birdieing the seventh and eighth holes.

Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau at wrong end of Open leaderboard on first day
A month after McIlroy’s nightmare finish at Pinehurst helped DeChambeau win a second US Open title, the pair faced an uphill battle just to qualify for the final major of the year at Royal Troon.
McIlroy was tied for par after seven holes of his opening round before making double bogey on the iconic par-three eighth hole, the Northern Irishman’s first attempt to escape from a bunker on the Postage Stamp coming back to his feet.
