Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, known for his cosmic advice to celebrities, businesses and online influencers, spoke to “Good Morning America” about the best ways to take advantage of this courageous and passionate full moon.
But first, let’s break down the meaning of the Deer Moon.
When can you see the full moon?
The full moon will reach its peak illumination in the United States on Sunday, July 21 at 6:17 a.m. ET, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
Why is it called the deer moon?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which began publishing full moon names in the 1930s, notes that some Native American tribes named the July full moon “the Deer Moon” because of the time of year it occurs, which is early summer, when deer normally grow new antlers on their foreheads in layers of velvety fur.
According to the publication, other Indigenous groups also have alternate names for the full moon, including the Feather Moult Moon and the Salmon Moon, to indicate when fish return to the area and are ready to be harvested.
Meanwhile, NASA said, Europeans also dubbed the full moon the Hay Moon for haymaking in June and July, and sometimes the Mead Moon because mead is created by fermenting honey mixed with water, sometimes with the addition of fruits, spices, grains or hops.

The zodiac sign of each full moon is determined by the moon’s position in the night sky relative to the different astrological signs. Each year, the moon moves, resulting in different characteristics around the moon, according to Thomas.
This year, the Deer Moon is positioned as a Full Moon in Capricorn, an Earth sign and the tenth on the wheel and on the axis opposite the water sign, Cancer.
“The Cancer-Capricorn axis helps us understand the legacies we build, as well as how we build on tradition and the past,” Thomas said, noting that these two zodiac signs reflect each individual’s private and public lives.
“The planets are all in a big dance right now, so even though we’re facing obstacles, the best thing to do is step back and pivot, focus on fun and connection, and think about how you can build your greatest legacy,” Thomas added.
