Eminem achieves his 11th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart (dated July 27) as his latest studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)debuts at No. 1 on the chart. The album launched with 281,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. during the week ending July 18, according to Luminate. It marks the biggest week for a rap album in 2024.
With his 11th No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, Eminem joins Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Ye (formerly Kanye West) for fifth place on the Billboard 200 in terms of No. 1s. Ahead of them are the Beatles (a record 19 No. 1s), Jay-Z and Taylor Swift (14 each) and Drake (13).
Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, three groups debut their highest-charting albums of all time, as ENHYPEN, Clairo, and Megan Moroney’s latest albums enter at Nos. 2, 8, and 9, respectively. Additionally, after 12 consecutive weeks at No. 1, Taylor Swift The Department of Tortured Poets spent its first week outside the top spot, falling to No. 4 in its 13th week on the list.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States based on multi-metric consumption measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units include album sales, track equivalent albums (TEAs), and streaming equivalent albums (SEAs). Each unit is equivalent to one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 official ad-supported audio and video streams or 1,250 paid/subscription audio and video on-demand streams generated by songs from an album. The new chart dated July 27, 2024 will be published in its entirety on Billboard‘s website on July 23. Of The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)Of the first week’s 281,000 units, SEA units include 164,500 (or 220.08 million official on-demand streams of tracks from the album’s streaming edition; The death also debuted at number one on the Top Streaming Albums chart, with album sales including 114,000 units (all from digital downloads; it was not available as a physical album) and TEA units including 2,500.
The deathThe album’s first-week sales mark the biggest sales week of 2024 for a rap album. It’s also the second-biggest sales week this year for a digital download album, behind only Swift’s debut. Poets with 274,000 downloads sold in its first week.
The death was available for purchase only as a digital download and was widely distributed in clear, explicit editions, in addition to three other variants sold exclusively through Eminem’s official webstore. Of the latter three, two were sold as pre-orders for a limited time before the box set’s release, and each came with its own exclusive bonus track—one featuring “Kyrie & Luka,” featuring 2 Chainz, and one featuring “Like My Shit,” featuring FIFTEENAFTER. A third webstore variant was released on Wednesday (July 17), containing both bonus tracks and an exclusive “Steve Berman” skit. The CD and vinyl editions of The Death of Slim Shady are scheduled to be released on September 13 and October 25, respectively.
Eminem’s new album was preceded by two top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, “Houdini,” which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the chart dated June 15, and “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, which climbed to No. 27 on the chart dated July 20.
ENHYPEN earns their highest-charting album to date and fourth top 10, Romance: Unpublished The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 124,000 album-equivalent units earned—the band’s biggest week ever in terms of units. Of this total, album sales accounted for 117,000 units (the band’s best sales week; the album debuted at number one on the album chart), SEA units accounted for 7,000 units (equivalent to 9.53 million official on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), and TEA units accounted for a negligible amount. Sales of the album were bolstered by its availability on 17 different CD variants, all containing collectible paper ephemera such as photo cards, stickers, and a poster, as well as two vinyl editions.
Zach Bryan The Great American Bar Scene slips 2 to 3 in its third week on the chart (88,000 equivalent album units; down 36%) while Taylor Swift The Department of Tortured Poets falls 1-4 (82,000; down 50%). The latter spent its first 12 weeks in the chart at No. 1.
Morgan Wallen tops the charts One thing at a time dropped from #3 to #5 on the Billboard 200 with 66,000 equivalent album units earned (down 5%), Hit me hard and soft drops 4-6 with 57,000 units (down 2%) and Chappell Roan The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess dropped from 5 to 7 with 54,000 units (down less than 1%).
Clairo achieves his highest-charting album to date and his first top 10, Charm Clairo debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 with 47,000 equivalent album units earned—her best week in terms of units. Of that total, album sales accounted for 32,000 (her best sales week to date), SEA units accounted for 15,000 (equivalent to 19.78 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), and TEA units accounted for a negligible amount. The album’s first-week sales were boosted by the album’s availability in eight vinyl variants and four deluxe box sets (containing branded merchandise and a CD). Vinyl sales accounted for 15,000 units of the album’s first week—Clairo’s best week on vinyl.
The album was preceded by the single “Sexy to Someone”, which reached the top 20 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart, and the top 30 on the Alternative Airplay and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts.
Megan Moroney Scores First Billboard 200 Top 10 With Second Full-Length Studio Album Am I okay? ranks at No. 9 with 43,000 equivalent album units earned—the singer-songwriter’s biggest week in terms of units. Of that total, SEA units comprised 30,000 (equivalent to 38.05 million official on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprised 13,000, and TEA units comprised fewer than 500. The album was preceded by a trio of Hot Country Songs chart entries: “No Caller ID,” “28th of June,” and “Indifferent.” The new album’s success follows Moroney’s chart breakthrough in 2023 with the single “Tennessee Orange,” from her debut full-length album, Lucky (reaching No. 38 on the Billboard 200 in 2023). “Tennessee” peaked at No. 10 on the Hot Country Songs chart and was nominated for Song of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards.
