Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony: Olympic flame rises above Paris as Celine Dion wows crowd

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are officially open and the Opening Ceremony was a spectacular display of athletes from the 206 Olympic delegations and the city of Paris. Lady Gaga and Celine Dion hosted the musical performances and French sporting icons such as Zinedine Zidane, Amélie Mauresmo and Tony Parker as well as international Olympic legends – including Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comăneci and Rafael Nadal – took part in the final stages of the Olympic Torch Relay, which concluded with the lighting of a flying cauldron over the City of Lights.

With the Games officially open, you can relive all the best moments – or see them for the first time – right here with Yahoo Sports, as NBC Sports presents the entire Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony in primetime.

  • Celine Dion makes her triumphant return to Paris

At the top of the Eiffel Tower (where else?), Celine Dion returns to the stage after years of battling stiff-person syndrome. And she sounds as incredible as ever.

  • The Olympic cauldron has been lit and is flying, attached to a hot air balloon

After several other relays between French Olympic legends, the flame now flies over Paris in spectacular fashion. It was Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner who had the honour of doing so.

Yahoo Sports’ Henry Bushnell is at the opening ceremony and gives us this analysis of the spectacular flying cauldron:

“Olympic organizers said in a briefing document distributed to the media that the cauldron was “a tribute to the first flight in a hydrogen-filled gas balloon,” which took place in Paris in 1783. In December of that year, the hot-air balloon became the first aircraft to carry humans when two of its French inventors, physicist Jacques Charles and engineer Nicolas-Louis Robert, took off from the Tuileries Gardens.

  • Parker and Mauresmo joined by three French Paralympic legends

The group jogs through Paris with the flame, led by three-time Olympic handball champion Michael Guigou. Usually, the flame is passed on, but the entire group continues to walk with the flame as it travels through the City of Lights.

  • The Olympic flame is back on earth

After Nadal and company took the flame for a boat ride, French relations resumed with tennis legend Amélie Mauresmo carrying the flame through the Louvre and passing the flame to NBA legend Tony Parker.

  • Where is the Olympic flame heading?

Nadal left the Eiffel Tower with the flame and jumped onto a boat, where he met Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comăneci, making the reverse journey from the previous parade.

  • It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Zidane (almost three and a half hours), but he’s back with the torch, passing it on to… Rafael Nadal?!

  • Another uniform that was unfortunately missed from the show is Guatemala’s. It features a lot of national detail, with athletes wearing blue shirts and blue shorts or a green dress with a small blue vest. The hats are also blue with a Guatemalan pattern on the underside of the brim. A step up from the safari-style outfit, which is still a common theme among many countries’ Olympic outfits.

  • With the Parade of Nations over, here are some eye-catching uniforms that didn’t get their moment to shine during the NBC broadcast.

The Czech Republic’s outfits are among the most admired. Bold colors and patterns, breathable fabric and design, and a jacket that goes with almost everything. Their athletes are well-dressed and comfortable.

  • The French team and its 571 athletes wore uniforms that included sleeveless blazers for the women. The French are known for their fashion, but these long sleeveless vests may not be a hit in the United States.

  • The final three countries to parade are, in that order, Australia, the United States and France. France finishes last as host country; with the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia, these countries will be honored as future hosts.

  • Team USA’s uniforms have been redesigned by Ralph Lauren, and these three women’s soccer stars show exactly how they should be worn.
