- Parents with disposable income are turning to some luxury baby and toddler brands.
- The Snoo smart crib comes with a hefty price tag, but some parents swear by it.
- These are the brands and items that have become status symbols.
Becoming a parent is a whirlwind of emotions. It also means spending a lot of money on items for the new baby.
Although babies need very little—a safe place to sleep, diapers, and around-the-clock feeding—parents with disposable income often turn to high-end products that offer extra features and sleek designs.
As a parent of three kids under 6, I’ve seen the same products circulate over and over again on momfluencers’ Instagram accounts, celebrities’, and friends’ baby registry pages.
Here are some of the most popular status symbol brands and products for babies and why parents are obsessed with them.
The smart crib adored by celebrities
The Snoo was invented by celebrity pediatrician Harvey Karp and has been on the market for nearly a decade. Celebrity parents like Zoe Saldaña and Justin Timberlake love it.
The appeal of the Snoo isn’t just its minimalist design, but also the promise that the smart bassinet will soothe babies and help parents get more sleep during those crucial early months. The bassinet rocks while playing white noise, and if baby fusss, the motion and volume increase to help lull them back to sleep.
The crib retails for $1,695 and can be rented for a monthly fee of $159.
A car seat and stroller in one
Finding car seats and strollers can be difficult because there are so many options. The Doona car seat makes it easy with a rolling car seat that easily converts to a stroller.
The Doona is another celebrity favourite, with Suki Waterhouse, Kourtney Kardashian, Paris Hilton and many more choosing it to transport their children.
Ideal for city-dwelling parents because it’s easy to install in any car, the Doona sells for $550 and can accommodate children up to 35 pounds or 32 inches (whichever height they reach first).
Two brands dominate the luxury stroller market
There are endless choices when it comes to strollers, from travel strollers to toddler strollers. But two products dominate the luxury stroller market: the UppaBaby Vista stroller and the Bugaboo Donkey stroller.
While I was pregnant with my first child, I was torn between these two models. I ultimately opted for the Vista because it has a narrower frame, allowing me to fit the stroller through single doors.
Even though my kids no longer use strollers, I still get texts from friends asking which one is better.
Both strollers have similar features: they have a bassinet for the baby and a seat for the baby to hold his head. They both have an adjustable push bar, large sturdy wheels and a large storage space.
The Vista retails for $999.99 and the Donkey retails for $1,499.
A Scandinavian high chair that grows with your child
Norwegian brand Stokke launched its iconic Tripp Trapp high chair in 1972. The chair has become a status symbol due to its sleek design and practicality, and is loved by influencers for its simplicity.
The high chair grows with your child and can even be transformed into a stool for older children and adults.
The chair retails for $299 to $399 and is available in 10 different colors.
An easy-to-clean changing mat
The $149 Peanut Kekaroo Changing Pad is so popular that its website only allows users to purchase two per order. That’s no surprise since parenting websites have consistently voted it one of the best changing pads for babies.
Since becoming a parent in 2018, I’ve seen this changing mat on every baby registry my friends have put together.
Word of mouth has made it a favorite among parents because it makes diaper changes easier, as the rubber texture prevents babies from slipping. It’s also easy to clean in case of accidents, which happen all the time.
A diaper bag ready for anything
Leaving home with a baby means parents have to carry a lot of stuff: diapers, feeding supplies, extra clothes, a collection of pacifiers and the beloved blanket that can never get lost.
The trendy Dagne Dover Indi diaper bag, named the diaper bag for modern parents by Vogue, helps you keep track of everything.
It has enough compartments to separate items and includes a neoprene pouch for dirty clothes or diapers. The bag also has several exterior pockets for essentials like wipes and keys.
The Indi Diaper Bag is available in three sizes and 11 colors. The largest bag retails for $219.
A crib straight out of a fairytale nursery
Oeuf is a pricey Brooklyn-based baby products brand that strives to be sustainable in a market known for generating a lot of waste.
The brand uses recyclable materials like birch wood in its furniture, including the $975 Moss crib.
The crib has been featured in Vogue as a must-have baby item. Celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian and Liv Tyler have also shared photos of their nursery featuring the Oeuf crib.
To make it the ultimate status symbol, you can add the $499 Newton Crib Mattress, which is breathable, washable, and can keep your baby cool. Since leaks happen, there’s a waterproof option for $399. A $280 kit to convert the crib into a toddler bed is also sold separately.
Hands-free pumps
Nothing takes more time for new parents than feeding a baby, and the idea that breastfeeding is free doesn’t take into account the number of hours someone must spend attached to a baby or a breast pump during those first six months.
While many insurance plans cover traditional breast pumps, the next big trend is having a hands-free breast pump that allows parents to do other things while they pump. Brittany Mahomes shared a photo of herself using a hands-free breast pump while doing Pilates, and Blake Lively has also been spotted wearing one.
Two brands stand out and are popular with parents: the Willow at $400 and the Elvie at $550.
Having used both myself, I can say that they are quite comparable.
A baby carrier that costs almost as much as a stroller
I often see people asking in luxury goods Facebook groups where people buy and sell products if anyone is selling their Artipoppe baby carrier.
The carriers range in price from $370 for a standard carrier to $3,800 for a 30 percent cashmere carrier and are available in more than a dozen prints and fabrics, some of which require hand washing.
All Artipoppe baby carriers are designed to be used from birth to 2 years. They can be worn facing in, facing out or as a backpack.
A minimalist balance bike
The Iimo balance bike stands out for its minimalist design and limited color palette: it is only available in white and red.
The Japanese brand launched in the United States in 2019 with the aim of providing stylish and practical products to American parents. It has won several design awards in Japan for its balance bike and tricycle.
The bike retails for $280 for the balance bike option and $388 for the bike plus the pedal kit to turn it into a regular bike. Other similar balance bikes, like the Retrospect balance bike, retail for just $69.99.
A layer that rises to the challenge
Having had twins, I tried every diaper on the market. There was one clear winner for keeping my babies dry at night: Coterie diapers.
Even though the diapers don’t come in cute prints like other brands, their quality is second to none. Models and moms Karlie Kloss and Ashley Graham have not only used the diapers with their children, but have also become brand ambassadors. Kloss is also an investor in the brand.
Sizes range from newborn (under 10 pounds) to seven years (over 41 pounds) and retail for $90 without auto-renew options. If you choose auto-renew, you get a 10% discount.
A smart baby monitor that monitors sleep
Sleep is essential for children as they grow, so it’s no surprise that parents with disposable income are opting for the Nanit Pro baby monitor.
Nanit offers a sensorless breathing bracelet that can be used from birth to 3 months of age. After that, a sleep tracking subscription option allows parents to see how many hours a child has slept and get insights on what they need to adjust. The app also displays the room temperature and humidity.
Beyond the extra features, the camera’s definition in the dark is excellent, allowing parents to keep an eye on their little ones even in the darkest rooms.
Celebrity moms like Gigi Hadid and Halsey have added Nanit to their baby registry.
The camera can be mounted on a floor or wall stand and retails for between $249 and $399.
An airline approved rolling suitcase
Traveling with kids can be stressful, especially with little ones who can’t walk long distances. The Jet Kids rolling suitcase solves this problem.
Kids as young as 3 can travel in the suitcase, which can also hold their favorite stuffed animal inside so it doesn’t get left behind at TSA. The suitcase transforms any airplane seat into a bed by filling the footrest space, making travel more comfortable for kids. Travel influencers swear by it, saying it makes traveling with young children a breeze.
The Jet Kids Rolling Suitcase is lightweight enough that you can also carry it by the strap if needed. It comes in seven colors and retails for $229.
