How long will this last, and if this cooler weather persists through the weekend and election news arrives here at noon, actor, DEMOCRAT DONOR AND KENTUCKY ORIGINAL GEORGE CLOONEY WEIGHS IN ON PRESIDENT BIDEN’S RE-ELECTION CANDIDACY IN AN EXPLOSIVE OPINION PIECE THAT WAS JUST PUBLISHED WITHIN THE HOUR AND IT’S BEEN A YEAR SINCE A NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN A DRIVE-THROUGH SHOOTING. HOW HER LOVED ONES ARE MARKING AND REMEMBERING HER TODAY. THIS IS WLWT NEWS FIVE, LEADING THE WAY, AND FIRST AT NOON. WE’RE CATCHING THE TAIL OF THE BARREL TODAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. I’M MEGAN MITCHELL AND I’M STEVEN ALBRITTON. THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN BRINGING STORMS TO GREATER CINCINNATI OVERNIGHT AND IT’S STILL HAVING AN IMPACT NOW. DUKE ENERGY IS REPORTING THAT ABOUT 1,900 CUSTOMERS ARE CURRENTLY WITHOUT POWER. IT WAS DOWN TO ABOUT 100 BY 6:30 THIS MORNING. SO THERE’S CLEARLY BEING WORKED ON THERE. LET’S TALK TO METEOROLOGY WATCHER ALLISON ROGERS. YOU’VE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS FORECAST. YOU WERE HERE LIVE WITH KEVIN ALL NIGHT WATCHING THESE STORMS COME IN. AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE LEFT WITH. YEAH. AND SOME OF THESE CAUSES CAUSED SOME OF THE OUTAGES. I WAS LOOKING AT THE MAP EARLIER SAYING SOME TREE LIMBS HAD DOWN. AND SO THAT’S ONE OF THE THINGS WE’RE GOING TO SEE THIS AFTERNOON AS THESE WINDS CONTINUE, THERE’S A RISK OF BROKEN TREE LIMBS. I’M NOT EXPECTING INSANELY HIGH WINDS, BUT NEVERTHELESS, WE COULD HAVE GUSTS UP TO 30-40 MPH IN WEATHER THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WHICH IS DEFINITELY A POSSIBILITY FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. RIGHT NOW, WE ALSO STILL HAVE SOME LIGHT RAIN THAT’S SPITTING DOWN RAIN IN A FEW LOCATIONS SO FAR THIS AFTERNOON. THAT’S WHAT WE’VE HAD FOR MUCH OF THE MORNING. YOU CAN SEE IN A FEW HOURS NOW SOME AREAS THROUGHOUT CLERMONT COUNTY GETTING SOME OF THESE LIGHT RAINS. WE ALSO HAVE SOME AREAS OF LIGHT RAIN TOWARDS SOUTHEAST INDIANA. SO SOME AREAS OF SOME RAIN FROM NEWTONSVILLE UP TO MOUNT ORAB AND PARTS OF METRO CINCINNATI AS WELL AS TOWARDS NORTHERN KENTUCKY. SOME LIGHT RAIN NEAR HIGHLAND HEIGHTS RIGHT NOW, EAST TO ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, TOWARDS TURPIN, AND THEN A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO NEWTOWN. INTERstate 50. THEY’RE GETTING SOME OF THAT LIGHT RAIN. IT’S VERY SIMILAR IN SOUTHEAST INDIANA AND PARTS OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY. FOR THE REST OF THE DAY, WE’RE GOING TO SEE SOME WINDS GUSTS CONTINUE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. IN FACT, I THINK SOME OF THESE WINDS MIGHT BE CLOSER TO 2530, MAYBE EVEN STRONGER THAN THAT FOR THESE GUSTS THIS AFTERNOON. SO IN A BIT, I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU WHAT WE EXPECT TO SEE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, BECAUSE WE’RE GOING TO START SEEING SOME DRIERS. BUT WE’VE ALSO GOT SOME HEAT ON THE WAY FOR THE WEEKEND. I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW HOT IT’S GOING TO BE. MEGAN. ALL RIGHT. ALLISON, THANK YOU. A FAMILY IS HAVING A VERY HARD TIME CLEANING UP TODAY AFTER THE REMNANTS OF BERYL DROPPED A TREE RIGHT ON THEIR HOME. HERE’S ACTUALLY A LOOK AT THE DAMAGE FROM OVERNIGHT. EUCLID ROAD IN COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP. AND THE HOMEOWNERS TOLD US THEIR 100 YEAR OAK TREE FELL, TORN A HOLE IN THEIR ROOF. IT WOKE THEM UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. BUT THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED. AND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CREW WILL BE ON THE GROUND IN INDIANA TODAY AFTER REPORTS OF A TORNADO TURNED BY THE REMNANTS OF BERYL. WATCH. THE SUSPECTED TWISTER WAS CAPTURED ON THIS VIDEO NEAR A WAREHOUSE. THIS IS IN MOUNT VERNON, EAST OF EVANSVILLE. THE WAREHOUSE WAS EXTREMELY DAMAGED BY THE STORM. THE STORM ALSO LEFT A LINE OF DESTRUCTION IN A NEARBY NEIGHBORHOOD. YOU CAN SEE HERE MANY TREES DOWNED AND THE ROOF HAS BEEN BLOWN OFF SOME OF THE HOMES IN SOME PLACES. AT LEAST 19 HOMES AND SEVERAL OTHER BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED AND NOT FAR FROM THERE, A TRAIN DERAILED. THIS HAPPENED LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. THE DERAILMENT CAUSED TRAFFIC DELAYS IN THAT AREA, MOVED IT RIGHT AROUND. NO ONE WAS INJURED, THANKFULLY, BUT IT IS UNKNOWN IF THE DERAILMENT WAS CAUSED BY THIS STORM. I HAVE TO GIVE YOU SOME BREAKING NEWS IN OUR COMMITMENT 2024 COVERAGE. ACTOR AND KENTUCKY ORIGINAL GEORGE CLOONEY IS NOW JOINING THE CALLS FOR PRESIDENT BIDEN TO WITHDRAW FROM THE RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN. YEAH, THE MOVIE STAR AND LIFELONG DEMOCRAT WROTE IN A NEW YORK TIMES OPINION PIECE TODAY THAT THE PARTY WOULD LOSE THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE AND CONTROL OF CONGRESS WITH BIDEN AT THE TOP OF THE TICKET. CLOONEY IS A LONGTIME BIDEN SUPPORTER AND FUNDRAISER. THE PRESIDENT HAS REJECTED CALLS TO STEP DOWN AND ARGUED HE WAS FIT FOR A SECOND TERM. This is happening right now at 1202, it’s been one year since a nine-year-old girl was shot and killed in a shooting in Silverton. Today, the family and friends of Demya Pickens Barton are remembering her as they continue to wait for justice. News Five’s Brian Hamrick joins us live from downtown, where Maya’s loved ones are gathering right now. Brian, I know there’s going to be a lot of pink out there to honor her. Yes, there is. You know, they call it a march for justice or they try to remember what happened. AND I’M TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM KNOWS THAT THE FAMILIES ARE HERE AND THEY’RE GOING TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THE SYSTEM. BUT THESE WHEELS OF JUSTICE ARE TURNING VERY SLOWLY. SOME OF THEM HAVE STARTED GATHERING HERE. THEY’RE WEARING PINK, IN MEMORY OF DEMYA BARTON PICKENS. SHE WAS SHOT. A YEAR AGO TODAY, SHE WAS IN HER GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE ON PLAINFIELD DRIVE WHEN SOMEONE OPENED FIRE ON THE HOUSE. IT WAS A DRIVE-BY STYLE SHOOTING. TODAY, THREE MEN WERE ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS CRIME. But again, justice takes its time and even a year later, there are still questions about what happened there and who is responsible. So there were dozens of shots fired at the house. It was a horrific scene there. So what we have is people who have gathered today, uh, for Maya’s family and are going to be there, other groups are going to be there to stop the violence. DIFFERENT GROUPS WILL BE HERE. uh, they’re going to be marching around the courthouse. THEY’RE GOING TO GO DOWN CENTRAL PARKWAY, COME BACK AND END AT THE JUSTICE CENTER AND AGAIN, THIS IS ALL JUST TO TRY TO KEEP THE MEMORY OF DEMYA BARTON PICKENS THERE. THE NINE YEAR OLD CHILD THAT WAS KILLED. AND TO KEEP THE PRESSURE UP AND MAKE SURE THAT THOSE RESPONSIBLE ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
West Nile virus identified in mosquito population, Springdale health officials say
The Springdale Health Department said it recently collected mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquitoes were collected in the southwest quadrant of the community, according to the department. Transmitted to humans through the bite of a WNV-positive mosquito, health officials say in most cases, a person bitten will develop no symptoms or have a very minimal reaction (flu-like symptoms). In rare cases, officials say WNV can cause more serious illness, including paralysis, brain swelling, coma or, in rare cases, death. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems due to a pre-existing medical condition, such as cancer or high blood pressure, are at increased risk for severe symptoms from WNV. To protect yourself and your family from West Nile virus, Springdale health officials suggest the following: Drain standing water sources, including buckets, tires and birdbaths Apply mosquito repellent dips to bodies of water that cannot be immediately drained Mosquito repellent dips are available at the Springdale Health Department office Take steps to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home (e.g., repairing window screens, keeping doors closed) Use an EPA-approved insect repellent and reapply as directed Cover exposed skin as much as possible If camping or sleeping outdoors, use a screen tent Dress children in clothing that covers arms and legs when weather permits Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting Do not use repellent on babies under 2 months of age Do not apply repellent directly to the face of a child, spray on your hands firstFor more information or assistance, visit the Springdale Health Department website.
