Early ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Reactions Praise Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Chemistry in ‘Dynamite’ and Their ‘Epic’ Cameos: ‘A Sea Change for the MCU’

The first reactions to Deadpool & Wolverine are in and they are overwhelmingly positive. The excitement for the film comes at a much-needed time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has seen rare setbacks in the past year with the releases of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. The latest Deadpool film is the only Disney-backed Marvel film on the 2024 release schedule and marks the character’s official introduction to the MCU. Film press are calling the sequel “bloody and fun” and “a step in the right direction for Marvel.”

“Deadpool and Wolverine are game-changing movies for the MCU, as this is the biggest, boldest, most badass MCU movie since Infinity War and Endgame,” wrote Sean Tajipour of Nerdtropolis. “Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are the ultimate duo we’ve all been waiting for!”

The Direct’s editor-in-chief David Thompson called “Deadpool & Wolverine” both “the bloodiest” and “funniest” MCU project ever, adding, “Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman coming together as icons is AMAZING. It’s not perfect, but it’s a thrilling cinematic experience (and) a step in the right direction for Marvel.”

“Yes, the cameos and surprises are epic, and the humor, action, gory fights and needle drops are also great… but it’s the respect and love for the characters that win you over,” wrote Fandango’s Erik Davis.

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds stars as the Mouth Mercenary for the third time, alongside Hugh Jackman in his long-awaited return to the iconic X-Men character following 2017’s “Logan.” That film featured the death of the Wolverine character Jackman had played since 2000’s “X-Men.” The ongoing multiverse in the MCU has allowed Jackman to return as a different iteration of the mutant. The film’s supporting cast includes Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin and more.

Although Marvel has struggled with box office failures over the past year, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is already shaping up to be a huge success for the studio. The sequel, which is the first R-rated entry in the MCU, is on track to rake in an opening weekend of around $165 million, which would mark not only the biggest launch of 2024 so far, but also the best opening for an R-rated title in history.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters July 26 from Disney. Check out the first reactions below.
