Xbox Game Pass is down – live updates on the outage

Refresh

As of Saturday morning, the Xbox status page remains red, indicating that the store and Game Pass subscriptions are experiencing a major outage. Viewing of games available on Game Pass is also offline, or some details may be missing for some titles.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. ET, the team posted a status update stating that “it’s taking longer than expected” to resolve the issue. No further updates have been posted on the official Xbox X account, which continues to direct queries to the status page.

For those affected, it is not certain that we will be able to find a solution before the end of the weekend.

As I write this, it’s 5pm PT and Xbox Game Pass is still down. We haven’t heard anything from official Microsoft channels.

The Xbox status page remains red, indicating that Game Pass is experiencing a major outage. The Xbox X Support account continues to direct queries to the status page.

We asked Microsoft spokespeople for more details, but they have declined to respond since our initial emails.

It’s still unclear why Game Pass is experiencing issues. It could be, as previously suggested, that the CrowdStrike outage is causing ripple effects. Accounts trying to pay for a new or ongoing Game Pass subscription are experiencing issues with payments sent from July 17 to July 19, right around the time the CrowdStrike outage occurred.

Another theory is that this is related to the price increase scheduled for September, with a calendar or clock issue affecting people’s ability to renew their subscriptions. Microsoft may not want anyone to buy new subscriptions and keep the old price.

I’ve seen X users and Redditors claiming this is related to the Modern Warfare 3 hack yesterday. I haven’t been able to confirm that MW3 was hacked. It appears that the game or servers were suffering from an error code called “Detrick Guernsey” that also affected Modern Warfare 2, though this appears to be a PC issue and not an Xbox issue.

We’re seeing reports that, similar to when Xbox Live went down, if you disconnect from the internet you should still be able to play games.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t help with games picked up through Game Pass or some multiplayer games, which require the service to access.

The outage is ongoing and for some people we are approaching 24 hours without access to Game Pass, meaning they have been unable to enjoy their Xbox games.

The PC version of Game Pass does not appear to be affected.

It’s also a big weekend for multiplayer gaming, with the Modern Warfare 3 remake coming to Game Pass and the new Valorant beta also dropping today. Additionally, EA’s highly anticipated College Football 25 debuted last week, and people are continuing to get excited about this excellent football game.

A Microsoft spokesperson reached out to us regarding the Game Pass outage. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide us with any further details beyond checking the status page.

“We are working to resolve issues some members may be experiencing that are impacting the renewal of game subscriptions. Please visit https://xbox.com/status for status updates.”

It’s 3pm PT and Game Pass is still having issues. The outage notification time was pushed back to 5pm yesterday and the repair appears to be underway.

Otherwise, we see that this Game Pass outage could be global, as people from all over the world are reporting issues on Twitter and Reddit.

No one at Xbox has officially said anything, but the Xbox status page received a small edit that indicates this Game Pass issue may extend for more than 24 hours.

The connection issue and game viewing issue now state that the first outage was reported at 9am this morning (July 26th), which doesn’t seem correct unless they’re considering last night’s issues to be a different thing.

The most interesting update is that it looks like the issue won’t be resolved until 5:55am tomorrow morning (July 27).

For those affected, you may still have to wait overnight.

On Reddit, a user claims to have spoken with Xbox Support who claims to have a fix in the works. They mentioned that an email will be sent with instructions and information on how to fix the subscription renewal issue.

We’ve reached out to Xbox for comment and will update you if they respond. However, during the last outage, no one at Xbox was inclined to provide a response, so we don’t expect one this time around either.

Currently, this Game Pass outage has been going on for almost 20 hours.

I see speculation from Xbox players that this seems related to the upcoming Game Pass price increase.

This increase isn’t supposed to officially go into effect until September 12, but Redditors and X users are saying Xbox Support is forcing them to cancel their subscriptions and renew them, but they’re doing so at the higher price of $19.99 instead of the current price of $16.99.

Redditor Knaught said: “Yes, I just finished online support. I was 107th in line, waited over an hour. Another hour for the issue to be resolved. They canceled my subscription and signed me back up. It was really annoying. Now the monthly payment day I had set to where I wanted it to fall in the month has been changed. Hard to believe how stupid this whole thing is because of their greedy price gouging. During support I told them it sucks that they don’t acknowledge the issue for users. Later in the conversation she assured me that they now acknowledge the issue. They charged me $16.99 for that month and gave me Xbox balance points to make the next bill $18.99 and only be $16.99.”

One error screen we keep seeing screenshots of is related to the Game Pass extension with the error telling players “You already own this.” This could be related to an attempt to extend despite the price increase and system crash, but that’s just speculation.

Game Pass is still suffering from some sort of outage.

We are just days away from the major Crowdstrike outage that has impacted businesses and government agencies around the world.

Some Redditors are wondering whether or not the Crowdstrike crash has a delayed effect on Xbox systems.

This is likely not the case since the Crowdstrike patch arrived earlier this week. That said, it must be a clock or calendar issue in the Game Pass system. Multiple reports have shown that accounts whose subscriptions expired between July 17 and July 19 have been stuck waiting for payment ever since.

The Crowdstrike outage began on July 19.

As of 3:20 PM ET, Xbox’s status page still lists the Game Pass outage as major, with the separate issues of purchasing a Game Pass and seeing Game Pass games still affected.

Xbox has not released any information on a possible timeline for resolving the issues, beyond acknowledging that the outage is ongoing.
