The 2024 MLB trade deadline, scheduled for 6 p.m. ET this coming Tuesday, is less than three days away. We’ve already seen several big names traded in the past few days — Randy Arozarena to the Mariners, Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Yankeesetc. — and you can be sure that other things will move between now and the deadline. Here are the latest rumors regarding the deadline.
Blue Jays listening to Kiner-Falefa
Having already traded Danny JansenAccording to Sportsnet, the Blue Jays are open to offers for Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Unlike Jansen, Kiner-Falefa is not a rental player. He is under contract through next season at an affordable $7.5 million salary. Demand far outweighs supply for infielders at this deadline. It makes sense for Toronto to listen and see what teams are offering.
Kiner-Falefa, 29, is currently on injured reserve with a knee sprain. Players on the injured reserve can be traded, and Kiner-Falefa is expected to begin rehabbing in the minor leagues next week. He is expected to return soon. Kiner-Falefa is having his best offensive season by far and can play almost anywhere, though he is at his best defensively at third base.
Dodgers interested in Edman, Hoerner and Rengifo
The Dodgers are looking for infield reinforcements and are interested in Cardinals utility player Tommy Edman, Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner and Angels infielder Luis Rengifo, The Athletic reports. Edman has yet to play this season after offseason wrist surgery and a recent ankle injury. It’s unclear if the Cubs are willing to move Hoerner, who is signed through 2026.
Los Angeles currently has Max Muncy, whose recovery from an oblique strain has been slow, and Mookie Betts, who is making progress through his rehabilitation from a broken hand. Injuries to Chris Taylor (groin) and Miguel Vargas (forearm) have further thinned their core of position players. Even at full health, the Dodgers could use an infielder to play with Gavin Lux, and perhaps a center fielder.
Mets Checked Taillon
In the wake of Kodai Senga season-ending calf injuryThe Mets have checked in on Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon, the New York Post reports. Taillon is a veteran player in New York after spending two productive years with the Yankees. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was the Yankees’ bench coach during that time, so he and Taillon know each other well.
Sean Manaea has pitched well enough to opt out of his contract, meaning he will likely join Jose Quintana and Luis Severino as Mets starters in free agency. Senga, Tylor Megill, David Peterson and the currently injured Christian Scott is the Mets’ only starter under contract/team control in 2025. Taillon is set to make $18 million in 2025 and 2026 and would fill a long-term rotation need.
Angels listen to offers for Rengifo, Ward
The Angels are listening to offers for infielder Luis Rengifo and outfielder Taylor Ward, according to MLB.com. People around the game believe they will be traded before the deadline, and The Athletic reports the Royals are targeting both players. The Angels have already traded rental player Carlos Estévez. Rengifo and Ward are both under team control beyond 2024.
Kansas City has already won more games this year (57-48) than they did last year (56-106), and they have a one-game lead in the third wild-card spot. They really need help at third base and in the outfield, two positions that Rengifo and Ward can address. The Royals are likely to bolster their offense by the deadline. A big trade with the Angels seems possible.
The in-form Padres signed right-hander Jason Adam from the Rays, the teams announced Sunday. San Diego will send three prospects to Tampa: right-handed pitcher Dylan Lesko, outfielder Homer Bush Jr. and catcher J.D. Gonzalez. Adam, 32, has an outstanding 27.8% strikeout percentage this season and has shown he can play any role (reliever, starting pitcher, etc.). He is also under team control through 2026.
Lesko, the highest profile of the three prospectsAdam was selected 15th overall in the 2022 draft. He underwent Tommy John surgery shortly before the draft and has battled control issues since his return. Adam is the third notable player the Rays have traded in recent days, joining Randy Arozarena and Zach Eflin. Pete Fairbanks, Brandon Lowe, Isaac Paredes and others could be traded next.
Yankees, Padres, others check in on Snell
The Yankees and Padres are among the teams that have inquired about Giants left-hander Blake Snell, the New York Post reports. Snell struck out 15 Rockies in just six innings SaturdaySince returning from a groin injury earlier this month, he has a 0.75 ERA and has held opponents to a .104/.179/.169 batting average in four starts and 24 innings. He’s been terrific of late.
The Giants are 52-55 and 4.5 games out of a wild-card spot, and Snell is likely to decline his $30 million player option for 2025 and return to free agency. San Francisco won’t be able to make him the qualifying offer and get a draft pick back because they got it last offseason. They could trade Snell to avoid losing him for nothing in a few weeks.
Two NL Central teams pursue Fedde
The Brewers and another National League Central team, believed to be the Cardinals, are in pursuit of White Sox right-hander Erick Fedde, according to The Athletic. Fedde was roughed up for three runs in just four innings Saturday, despite having a 3.11 ERA this season and ranking second among all pitchers with a 4.7 ERA. He is under contract through next season at a very affordable $7.5 million salary.
Fedde, 31, has proven to be one of the best bargains of the offseason. He overhauled his arsenal with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization last year and his success has carried over to MLB. Fedde won’t come cheap, but the Brewers are short on arms. St. Louis is six games back in the division and just two games out of a wild-card spot.
Angels’ Garcia attracts interest
Angels right-handed reliever Luis Garcia is attracting strong interest as the deadline approaches, the New York Post reports. The Halos traded closer Carlos Estévez to the Phillies on Saturday.. Garcia is almost certain to be next. The 37-year-old may not be a high-impact reliever at this point in his career, but he qualifies to be the third- or fourth-best reliever in a contender’s bullpen. There’s a good chance he’ll be wearing a new uniform Wednesday.
Cubs add Paredes
With some surprise, The Cubs acquired Rays third baseman Isaac Paredes in a four-player trade with the Rays. Christopher Morel and pitching prospects Hunter Bigge and Ty Johnson are going to Tampa. Chicago is looking at veteran players as the deadline approaches, including Taillon and closer Hector Neris, but Paredes is under team control through 2027 and is a long-term addition. Tampa is in for a demolition at the deadline, it seems.
