The field for the US Open is now set.
The “Longest Day in Golf” took place Monday, when 687 players competed for the last 44 available spots in the field at this year’s U.S. Open. The final 10 of 13 USGA qualifying matches were played Monday, and many regular faces from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf were among those competing for a spot in the season’s third major championship.
Although thousands have a chance on the US Open field, these qualifiers are especially important for LIV Golf members because their tournaments do not qualify for world ranking points. This makes it increasingly difficult for golfers to secure a spot in major tournaments, especially if they don’t have an automatic exemption.
The 44 golfers who secured their spots Monday joined 23 others who secured their spots in three previous qualifiers, previously held in Japan, England and Texas. In total, 10,052 golfers attempted to qualify. Of the 44 golfers who passed, 22 of them are fully exempt members of the PGA Tour.

The US Open will take place in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The kick-off will be given on June 13.
Cam Davis ends Adam Scott’s major streak
Adam Scott’s major championship run appears to be over.
After winning an incredible 91 consecutive major championships, Scott fell in a playoff to Cam Davis in qualifying in Springfield, Ohio, on Monday night. Unless he is named as a replacement, Scott will now miss his first major championship since missing the US Open in 2001.
Scott had a good round Monday and birdied the first playoff hole. But Davis responded with a birdie putt of his own, then two holes later he stuck his approach just short of the cup to set up for the winning birdie.
Scott, who has won 14 times on the PGA Tour, including the 2013 Masters, has struggled in recent years. His last victory came in 2020 at the Genesis Invitational, but he missed the cut at the PGA Championship last month and last year’s US Open in Los Angeles. He is ranked No. 60 in the world, and although the world’s top 60 at the end of this week earn spots in the US Open, Scott is almost certain to drop out because he is not in the field at the Memorial tournament in this week.
Davis has won once on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021. He played in his first U.S. Open last year, but missed the cut.
Other notable names fail to qualify
Joaquín Niemann is probably the biggest non-PGA Tour name who failed to earn a spot in the US Open on Monday. Niemann was playing at Bear’s Club in Florida, where Matt Kuchar won the event. Niemann finished at 2 under that day, which was just one shot away from making the playoffs.
Niemann won twice on the PGA Tour before moving to LIV Golf. He is the captain of Team Torque, which currently sits fourth in the season standings, and he is currently first in the individual season standings with over 30 points ahead of Jon Rahm. Niemann, however, is currently ranked No. 95 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Since he didn’t earn his spot in a different way and failed to qualify on Monday, Niemann will miss the US Open.
Zach Johnson, who captained the United States for the Ryder Cup in Rome last fall, failed to qualify in Ohio on Monday. He posted a score of 2 under that day, five shots short of the cut. Johnson, a 12-time Tour winner and two-time major winner, has not won since 2015. He has missed the cut five times on Tour this season, including last week at the RBC Canadian Open.
Other notable golfers missing include Stewart Cink, Charley Hoffman, Graeme McDowell, Charl Schwartzel, Luke Donald and Jason Dufner.
Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed have already failed to qualify
Although Monday was the longest day in golf, it wasn’t the only opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Open.
A few notable names have already missed qualifying last month, including Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia. Both golfers missed the target during qualifying at the Dallas Athletic Club on May 20.
Garcia narrowly missed the shot. He was named the first alternate out of the region after losing in the playoffs seven to six. Like Scott, Garcia can still qualify for the US Open if someone withdraws. Reed withdrew from qualifying before it began, which will end his impressive run at major championships. Reed has competed in every major since the 2014 Masters. Since withdrawing from the event, he is not allowed to attempt another qualifier.
Joel Dahmen, Kevin Streelman, Henrik Norlander, Cam Champ, Brendan Steele and Ryan Moore also did not qualify for Dallas. Francesco Molinari was one of 11 qualifiers from this region.
