Tennessee baseball is back in the College World Series.
The nationally ranked No. 1 seed Vols (55-12) will face the No. 8 seed Florida State Seminoles (47-15) on Friday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tennessee has reached the College World Series three times in the last four seasons under coach Tony Vitello. UT came to the CWS in 2001 for the first time since 2005. It returned in 2023 and won a CWS game for the first time since 2001.
UT went 5-1 through the Knoxville Regional and Super Regional to advance to the College World Series. Florida State swept the Tallahassee Regional and Super Regional.
UNC earned a 3-2 win over Virginia in the opener on Friday. The winner of Tennessee-FSU will face UNC on Sunday night, while the loser will face Virginia in a playoff game in the opener on Sunday.
Live score updates from Tennessee vs. Florida State baseball in the College World Series
Florida State 9, Tennessee 6, last 5: Kavares Tears 2 points HR
Kavares Tears lines up a one-out, two-run home run to right field. The Vols are down three.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, top 5: 1-2-3 set
The first 1-2-3 inning of the game for the Vols as Aaron Combs strikes out two in the FSU 5th.
Flights will need more runways and some length of Combs.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, bottom 4: Vols leave bases loaded
Tennessee loaded the bases with two outs, but Billy Amick flew out to center to end the inning.
Jamie Arnold is at 77 pitches, and with FSU’s lead, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Seminoles try to extend his outing for another inning or two.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, top 4: Seminoles offense clicks
Aaron Combs is there to pitch for Tennessee, and he allows a four-pitch walk followed by a two-run homer to left by Jaime Ferrer.
Florida State 7, Tennessee 4, bottom 3
A quick round, therefore a quick entry. FSU pitcher Jamie Arnold catches a Kavares Tears comebacker and leads into an inning-ending double play in a scoreless Tennessee 3rd.
Florida State 7, Tennessee 4, top 3: Steal pitchers, defensive brawls during a 6-run inning
The first five FSU batters reach and AJ Causey is out for the Vols.
After back-to-back singles, Jaime Ferrer hits a two-run double to right center. After another single and a RAP to fill the bases, Tony Vitello prepares to make the change. Here’s Kirby Connell with the bases loaded and no one out.
Causey didn’t have consistent command and FSU started throwing his sinking fastball.
Connell strikes one out but walks the next batter, tying the game at 4-4.
Connell managed to create a custom double play, but Burke missed the throw to second base and scored two runs.
Cam Smith hits a two-out triple to left, scoring FSU’s Max Williams from first base after Dylan Dreiling took a while to get the ball and throw it into the infield.
The Vols defense was a major problem tonight.
Tennessee 4, Florida State 1, bottom 2: Vols get lucky, taking advantage of FSU mistakes
The Vols are lucky to open the CWS. A two-out double by Christian Moore turns into a Cal Stark groundout (from first base) at home – except Stark’s knee dislodges the ball from the FSU catcher’s glove. Severe scores.
Moore found himself at third base and scored on the next at-bat via a bad throw from Jamie Arnold on a soft ground that also should have been the third out.
Tennessee 2, Florida State 1, first 2nd: AJ Causey skirts problems
AJ Causey hits a crucial double play to end the inning after a Christian Moore error and a one-out single.
FSU’s Jaxson West should have scored after a misplayed ball on the single, but apparently missed the third base bag and had to stop and stay at third base.
The Vols’ defense has been shaky early, but Tennessee still leads.
Tennessee 2, Florida State 1, last 1: Vols offense went to Omaha
Christian Moore makes a 3-1 count against FSU pitcher Jamie Arnold, then hammers a line drive to the gap in right center. He finds himself at third base with a leadoff triple.
Blake Burke’s pop-up to shallow left field falls in front of FSU LF Jaime Ferrer. Moore scores and the Vols are already back even after two batters.
After a walk, Dylan Dreiling drove in Burke with an RBI single to center. Arnold gets a Hunter Ensley GIDP and a Kavares Tears Groundout to end the round.
Florida State 1, Tennessee 0, leadoff first: Chris Stamos faces just three batters
FSU leadoff hitter Max Williams reaches after Tennessee’s Blake Burke fields a soft grounder, but leaves first base uncovered. Cam Smith walks on four pitches before a nice play by Burke on a force out at second base.
This is AJ Causey from the bullpen. Chris Stamos will only face three batters in his opening role.
Causey eliminates Marco Dinges before walking Jaime Ferrer. On the fourth ball sent to Ferrer, the ball goes away from Cal Stark and Williams scores on the wild pitch. Causey walks another one before a visit from Frank Anderson.
Causey gets the strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning.
