FRIDAY PM: There’s no stopping the flow of money into theaters from coast to coast for Disney/Pixar films. Inside Out 2 which ends Friday at $60 million, the second-best opening day for an animated film after the studio’s 2018 title. Incredibles 2 at $71.2 million. It’s also leaps and bounds ahead of the day one of last summer’s animated hit, Sony’s Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse which grossed $51.8 million. This all leads to the third best opening ever for an animated film after Incredibles 2 ($182.6 million) and that of last year super mario bros Movie ($146.3 million over 3 days).
Not a surprise, Inside Out 2 gets a solid A CinemaScore, which is the same rating as the first film of 2015. The outperformance, as we told you earlier today, comes from the enormous activity of Latino and Hispanic moviegoers who represent 42% of the audience of the sequel in front of 31% Caucasians, 10% blacks and 10% Asians.
Ahead of the weekend, social media analytics firm RelishMix saw nothing but sunshine for the Kelsey Mann-directed animated title, reporting: “Convo on Inside Out 2 ” is positive as reviewers are attracted to the conceit of this sequel and the promise of new emotions, saying: “Pretty interesting that there are antagonists in a Disney movie about emotions. Complex vs. Basic Emotions” and “Anxiety is a fantastic villain.” The baggage, being budded with envy and embarrassment. Many fans of the original 2015 film are excited about the return of one of their favorite Pixar films, saying, “I’m so excited to see the best Pixar movie sequel ever!” and ‘Emotions are back after 9 years. Let’s go!!!'”
Social media reach for Inside Out 2 on TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube stands at 556.4 million, which is ahead of Kung Fu Panda 4 (353.5M) and The trolls are regrouping (287M), but below Minions: The Rise of Gru (668.4 million). Stranger Things Leading the charge among social media voiceovers with a reach of more than 10 million is actress Maya Hawke, who plays the new character Anxiety.
One notable clip that racked up views on YouTube was the voiceover casting’s “Booth to Screen”:
FRIDAY AFTERNOON: If there’s any doubt that Disney+ cannibalized the box office specifically when it comes to Pixar films, well, you can throw that theory out the window. That’s because this weekend Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is heading towards the biggest opening of the year yet with $120 million to $130 million in 4,440 rooms. In fact, if the opening hits $150 million (that’s where rival studios see it), then it could be the second-best U.S. debut for a Pixar film after The Incredibles ($182.6 million).
At least $56 million is in the bank today, including last night’s $13 million. Sources tell me there is a huge turnout from Hispanic and Latino moviegoers at the walk-ins, hence the big business.
