2024 US OLYMPIC TRIALS
It’s been a long wait, but day four will mark the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials debut of two of the country’s biggest swimming stars, Caeleb Dressel And Kate Douglass.
Dressel will begin his quest for a successful defense of his Olympic title in the men’s 100 freestyle, but it will be a tall order to land an individual berth in Paris with world silver medalists like Jack Alexyfinalist of last night’s 200 free Chris Guilianoand four others who had less than 48 seconds during the practice qualifying period.
Douglass comes in as the top seed in the women’s 100 freestyle, where we’ll see Gretchen Walsh shows us his freestyle for the first time since he broke the world record in the 100 fly, while veterans Simone-Manuel, Weitzel Abbey And Olivia Smoliga will begin their quest to make a third straight U.S. Olympic team. Carson Foster, seeded No. 2 and finalist for the 2023 World Championship in this event, was not present in his series this morning, the third time that he did not scratch but rather DNS an event here in Indianapolis. Foster qualified for the Olympics two nights ago in the 400 IM.
Aaron Shackell, who ran two 400 frees and four 200 frees in the first three days of competition, added five seconds to his best time and placed 41st in 2:00.97. Shackell cemented his spot on the U.S. team heading to Paris after his big victory in the 400 freestyle on Saturday.
