Texas A&M baseball is one win away from making history.
The No. 3 Aggies (53-13) are looking for their first-ever national championship victory after beating No. 1 Tennessee 9-5 in Game 1 of the College World Series final Saturday night. With a win, Texas A&M would also become the seventh team to go undefeated in the postseason since the NCAA Tournament’s expansion in 1999.

The Aggies were impressive in the CWS despite playing without star outfielder Braden Montgomery, who suffered a season-ending injury against Oregon in the super regionals. Texas A&M home run leader Jace LaViolette is also dealing with a hamstring injury, while Hayden Schott is playing with a torn meniscus. Even typical No. 2 starter Shane Sdao is out for the season with an arm injury, depleting the Aggies’ pitching depth.
Ace Ryan Prager did his job Saturday, going four innings and allowing two runs on eight hits. Josh Stewart, Brad Rudis and closer Evan Aschenbeck combined for the final five innings, with Aschenbeck striking out seven batters in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Texas A&M now has two chances at a decisive series victory, while Tennessee has no margin for error.

2:23 p.m.: Cortez gets a big takedown for the second takedown of the round. Cortez tries to get out of a two-runner jam in the fourth.
2:20 p.m.: Cortez tells Curley to fly away before walking Peebles. Steals with runners on first and second with one out.
2:17 p.m.: Cortez allows a leadoff single on a Taveras line drive.

2:13 p.m.: Chestnut and Grahovac hit back-to-back bats to end the inning. Beam with five strikeouts in his last seven batters faced.
2:13 p.m.: Costly mistake for the Aggies, as Kent is thrown out at first base for the first out of the inning. Kent was initially ruled safe, but Tennessee contested the play and won.
2:08 p.m.: Kent starts the inning with a single on a bloop to right field. Aggies with a baserunner with no outs.

2:06 p.m.: Cortez strands a runner after striking out Ensley to end the inning. Cortez’s work has been exceptional so far.
2:05 p.m.: Dreiling returns to a fielder’s choice to Cortez, who fires to second base for the second out of the inning.
2:04 p.m.: Cortez responded by striking out Amick for the first takedown of the round. Big throw to get the Vols’ 3-hole hitter.
2:01 p.m.: Cortez walks Burke to start the third inning. Control has been a bit of an issue so far for the right-hander.

1:56 p.m.: Strong inning for Beam, as he takes out Burton, Sorrell and Camarillo to end the inning.

1:51 p.m.: Cortez gets another ground ball and Kent puts it away to get out of the inning. Aggies still leading 1-0.
1:50 p.m.: Cortez appears to receive a ground ball late in the inning, but Camarillo makes a costly throwing error that results in the bases being loaded.
1:45 p.m.: Curley flew out to center field for the second out of the inning before Cortez walked Peebles on four pitches. Steals with runners on first and second with two outs.
1:42 p.m.: Cortez retires the first batter he faces on a 99 mph fastball with a ton of arm running. This speech was disgusting.
1:38 p.m.: Badmaev singles up the middle, and that will be it for Badmaev. Cortez comes in in relief, where he will likely be asked to throw a starter’s workload.

1:34 p.m.: Appel and Schott both struck out to end the inning, but not without the Aggies taking an early lead.
1:30 p.m.: The ESPN broadcast announces that LaViolette’s home run traveled 111 miles per hour. That’s what we call a barrel, folks.
1:29 p.m.: Absolutely no doubt. LaViolette destroys a fastball and places it in the right field seats. The Aggies lead 1-0 early.
1:27 p.m.: Grahovac appears at second base for the Aggies’ first out.
1:26 p.m.: Grahovac commits a foul on his foot and the coach comes to check on him. However, he remains in the game.
1:23 p.m.: Grahovac takes the lead in the first drive of the Aggies’ offense.

1:20 p.m.: Badmaev emerges from the first round unscathed after striking out Dreiling to end the match. Good start after granting the first single.
1:15 p.m.: Big pair of outs for Badmaev, who forces Brock Burke to line out before striking out Tennessee 3-hole hitter Billy Amick. The Aggies opened the scoring almost in the first inning.
1:12 p.m.: Badmaev grants a first single to Vols star Christian Moore.
1:11 p.m.: Badmaev fires a shot and we’re on our way to Omaha.

11:46 a.m.: Interesting decision for the Aggies, since Badmaev will make his first start of the season on Sunday. It seems likely that Texas A&M uses Badmave as an opener before moving on to Chris Cortez in a major role.
