Rookie’s game-clinching home run highlights torrid streak amid midseason turnaround
04:16 UTC
MILWAUKEE — Remember last week, when the Brewers were struggling through a futile period with runners in scoring position? It seems like a long time ago.
Lately they’ve been having a lot of fun.
Jackson Chourio hit his first career grand slam in Friday’s 4-2 series-opening win over the Cubs at American Family Field, continuing a hot streak for the Central Division-leading Brewers. the National League, who have hit a grand slam in two straight games, three of the first four games of this series at home and four of their last eight games overall.
That’s a lot of fours on the scoreboard. Of the last five Brewers batters to dig into the batter’s box with the bases loaded, four hit a grand slam.
“I hope so,” Chourio said.
If you’ve ever scored at home, you know that hitters have been plentiful, from Brice Turang last week in San Diego with his bat choked, to sluggers Rhys Hoskins on Monday and Jake Bauers on Wednesday against the Rangers, to Chourio in the fourth inning against Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon on Friday night. The 20-year-old rookie’s masterstroke also made him the youngest player to hit a major league grand slam since the Mets’ Jose Reyes hit a grand slam for his first career home run on June 15. 2003, four days after his 20th birthday.
Chourio and Reyes are in very bad company. Since 1974, only 14 players 20 or younger have hit a major league grand slam. Before Chourio, the last 20-year-old to hit a grand slam was the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who hit two in 11 days in 2019.
Chourio’s feat is all the more unique given that his first career grand slam came in the game after his first inside-the-field home run in Wednesday’s win over the Rangers. Over his last 21 games since June 2, Chourio is batting .328/.371/.563.
“All my years of playing college baseball, you’ve seen guys grow year after year,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “But you didn’t see it in the middle of the year because we only played 60 games. When you see that happen in the middle of the year, from where he was in spring training to where he is today, it’s like, ‘Wow.’ What possibilities.”
It was teamwork that was decisive. The Brewers believed in his talent to the point of signing Chourio to a record eight-year, $82 million contract in December, then making him the youngest Milwaukee player since Robin Yount to make his major league debut on the day. of the opening.
After a fast start, Chourio found himself in the kind of trouble you might expect from the league’s youngest player. In May, there was a stretch where his playing time dwindled and his teammates had to remind him to trust his baseball instincts. Among those who lent their support were Brewers coach Néstor Corredor, assistant coach (and translator) Daniel de Mondesert and players like Willy Adames, William Contreras and Freddy Peralta.
“I told him the other day,” Peralta said, “‘Bro, you look different lately. I can see it. If you miss once or twice, it’s okay. Just keep going because I can see you look ready.’ That makes me feel good.”
Said Adames: “It’s all him. He is mature for his age and he proves it to everyone. We all knew he had talent, he just had to adapt. It’s not the minor leagues. »
Even Peralta, the pitcher, gives occasional hitting advice. That happened Friday after Taillon forced Chourio to field to a sweeper in the third inning. Peralta offered a reminder of that before the next at-bat.
“A friend of mine told me he was going to try to take me out with the same throw he used to take me out last time,” Chourio said. “I was kind of ready for that throw.”
Just like in his first at-bat, Chourio fell to 0-2. But this time he maintained his at-bat presence by fouling the next sweeper, then took a fastball for the first pitch. When Taillon came back with another sweeper and left it in the strike zone, Chourio hit it just over the left field wall.
“Every day I feel a little better,” Chourio said. “I know for a while things weren’t really going the way I wanted them to. But by remaining confident, I knew my time would come. »
Chourio — in a small sample size — has had a knack for coming through in those moments. Including Friday’s slam, he is 3-for-5 with a walk, a homer and eight RBIs in his first seven career plate appearances with the bases loaded.
“I’m not surprised,” Adames said. “It’s just fun to see what everyone was talking about.” »
