NEWS. CHRIS. THANK YOU. TWO PEOPLE ARE RECOVERING AFTER BEING ATTACKED BY A RABID FOX IN WINSTON-SALEM LAST WEEK. THE FORSYTH COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS NOW ISSUED A COMMUNITY WARNING. KARA PETERS SPOKEN TO SOMEONE WHO WAS IN THE AREA THE NIGHT OF THE ATTACKS. ONE PERSON WAS JUST WALKING IN AN AREA AND THE OTHER WAS ACTUALLY WORKING IN THE AREA. TWO PEOPLE WERE ATTACKED BY A RABID FOX NEAR THE SIMS RECREATION CENTER AND THE OLD SALEM COMMUNITY WITHIN MINUTES OF EACH OTHER. LAST THURSDAY, KEYSHAWN FIRKUS SAYS HE WAS VOLUNTEERING AT SIMS RECREATION CENTER THE DAY OF THE ATTACKS. The lady came in and told us that someone had been bitten, and I know everyone was rushing to see who had been bitten. AFTER THAT DAY, I was really nervous because you never know. Another FOX might come out or something. Um, but still, I just want to make sure I’m careful, don’t see any FOX AT ALL. THANKFULLY, MY STAFF OR I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ENCOUNTER, WHICH IS A BLESSING. Um. Um, a fox is cute, but probably not when it has rabies. County leaders say that so far this year, four animals have been tested for rabies. A fox, two skunks and a raccoon. That was what KARA PETERS reported tonight, the Forsyth County Health Department says the fox was located, shot and ultimately tested. If you were in the Sims Recreation Center area near the Old Salem community and encountered the fox between June 20 and June 27, health leaders urge you to get in touch.

A fox is cute, but probably not when it has rabies,” Lot 63 General Manager Trent Hancock said. The health department said the fox was found, euthanized and tested for rabies. If you came into contact with a fox near Old Salem between June 20 and June 27, you are encouraged to contact your primary care physician, as well as Forsyth County Animal Services, which can be reached at 336-703-2480. Anyone who believes their pet has come into contact with a fox should contact their veterinarian and Forsyth County Animal Services. “One person was just walking around the area, another person was actually working in the area,” public health nurse Maureen Rimer said at a news conference.
Keshaun Furches said he was volunteering at the recreation center when the fox attacked.
“The lady came in and told us that somebody had been bitten. And I know everybody was rushing to see who had been bitten,” Furches said. “After that day, I was really nervous because you never know – another fox could come out or something. But I just want to make sure I’m careful, that I don’t see any foxes at all.”
The Forsyth County Department of Public Health notified nearby businesses of the attack Tuesday.
