FRIDAY AM: Illumination/Universal Despicable Me 4 did $20.4 million on July 4, i.e. +28% compared to what Minions: The Return of Gru made on July 4, 2022, or $16 million. This is also +61% compared to Despicable Me 3July 4th of $12.7 million, but DM4July 4th is second behind DM2$24.5 million in revenue for the 2013 holiday season. Today we will reveal how much this sixth Minions/Despicable Me the universe of the film is above or below $120 million by Sunday, but it’s still a good catch for the Independence Day setting. The Friday-Monday start for Minions: The Return of Gru was $123 million. Cumulative total for DM4 is $47.6 million.
While DM4 Movie sales fell 25% from their opening day on Wednesday, but most films saw strong daily percentage gains on July 4, with the top 10 titles seeing an average daily increase of +25%.
As expected, Disney/Pixar Inside Out 2 crossed the half-billion mark after publishing a Thursday $7.2 million+2% compared to Wednesday. The current total stands at $503.6 million.
Paramount A quiet place: first day posted $4.7 million, +7% compared to Wednesday for a first week of $73.3 million+9% in the first week of 2018 A quiet place.
Yesterday’s opening was that of Angel Studios The Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot with $3.1 million That will put the film in 4 days well ahead of the $4-6 million we had spotted. The film from director/co-writer Joshua Weigel has an A+ CinemaScore and 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film tells the true story of Donna and Rev. Martin and their church in East Texas. Twenty-two families adopted 77 children from the local foster system, sparking a movement for vulnerable children everywhere. Nika King stars.
Kevin Coster’s western from New Line, Horizon, was up 73% on July 4 from Wednesday with $1.87 million bringing its first week to $16.7 million, down 16% from the 2003 multi-hyphenate western’s first week of $19.8 million Open range.
A24’s Ti West directed the third installment, with Mia Goth starring in the lead role. MaXXXinecomes out today. The film didn’t have any previews last night, but instead had previews on Wednesday.
UPDATE JULY 4 AM: Illumination/Universal Despicable Me 4 came a little lighter than speckled but pretty solid to $27 million in 4,030 theaters. While 5-day forecasts are always difficult to predict this far out, it all becomes clear on Friday. Even at this level, Gru’s fourth chapter/Minions’ sixth title could still see a $70 million 3 days and $120 million 5 days. Interest in this group has not yet waned for the public who gave it an A CinemaScore, the same grade as chapters 1 and 2, and a notch above Despicable Me 3’s A-. Overall, this is the fifth A for the Minions/Despicable Me My frankness.
Social media analytics firm RelishMix reports a very strong social media universe for DM4 on TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram with 641.5 million, 26% more than family animation competitors, but behind the 1.6 billion before Covid Despicable Me 3 in 2017 as well as after the pandemic Minions: The Rise of GruThat’s 668.4 million. The fourth Despicable Me Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith and Agnes welcome a new member into the family, Gru Jr., who is determined to annoy his father. Gru must also face a new enemy in the form of Max the Evil and his girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to flee.
DM4 easily won on Wednesday ahead of Inside Out 2, who did $7.3 million in 4,440 theaters, -35% compared to Tuesday for a $496.6 million cume. Look for Pixar’s sequel to cross the half a billion marks its 21st day in the U.S. today, the fastest an animated film has ever reached that mark, surpassing Pixar’s previous 24-day run to $500 million with 2018’s The Incredibles 2. Current outlook for IO2 is $31.7M on the fourth weekend, -45%, $46.3M over 5 days and a total of $535.6M on Sunday.
Paramount A quiet place: first day was third Wednesday in 3,708 locations with $4.3 million-33% compared to Tuesday and a cumulative total of $68.4 million. The forecast for the 3 days is $22.3 million (-57%) for Lupita Nyong’o’s film and $31.6 million 5 days for a running accumulation by Sunday $95.7 million.

New Line’s Kevin Costner Title Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on 3,334 sites created $1.1 million yesterday, for what looks like a $5.4 million 3 days and $7.8 million 5 days for a cumulative total of $21.6 million by Sunday. If this film cost $50 million (of the franchise’s $100 million total before production costs), it won’t even reach that figure at the domestic box office in the end.
Since it’s the 4th of July, don’t expect ticket sales to explode as many are sidelined from holiday activities. DM4 is expected to decline by about 20% or less today, while Inside Out 2 should remain at the same level as Wednesday.

That’s a number that puts the film on pace for $120 million in its first five days through Sunday. That’s where the tracker has spotted it, and it’s a number that underscores the continued upward nature of the current box office as event films crowd the calendar in the wake of Hollywood’s double-barreled strikes. Despicable Me 4 amounts to $70 million.
